We're taking the Newhaven ferry in a few days time (first time since Brexit) and wondered if anyone using that crossing recently has had their van checked for prohibited food.

Lots of posts regarding this recently. I have not seen Newhaven mentioned specifically but no checks reported on any other routes.

They do sell food over there, it’s not as bad as some make out…😎
We're arriving Sunday afternoon, supermarkets will be closed. We wondered about a couple of basics just to see us through till Monday. Never intended to take a week's supply!

Before Brexit & Covid, we used to take a few pre cooked meals for the first few days of travel, after which we shopped at supermarkets. We did the same this July, again for the convenience of not stopping while travelling. On the way out at Newhaven, they checked in the bathroom and under the bed - they never went near the fridge. On the way back in Dieppe, they never checked at all

A few tins of soup or your favourite dish and a packet of rice/pasta and any ready made meal will suffice, many take a contingency food package….

Of course it’s a good excuse to go to a restaurant….😎

We arrived at 1am to a motocross track in Belgium. No shops within distance and nowt onsite so I took enough to last the 3 nights. Not been checked 3 times now, more interested in the gas being turned off. Ironic most of my small illegal stash came from ALDI  We then moved to Dunkirk where I thoroughly enjoyed spending buckets in the huge Carrefour… a lot of which came back to England.

I’ve done three crossings Newhaven/Dieppe. No checks and no interest in checking the fridge. Only a cursory look inside the van for stowaways in Dieppe on the return

I used that crossing 3 weeks ago. No fridge checks, no inside inspection and never asked if gas was off at Newhaven. Same at Dieppe prior to return..

Take whatever you want...no problem...BUT don't bring any of that European MUCK with you when you return..Horrible stuff indeed..legs without bodies, some paste stuff that comes from a forced fed bird...and stuff they call cheese which hasn't got a patch on real cheese...Egg and Bacon Tart that they call...Keech Loren...who ever she is, some tart from a French Cooking program I imagine...as for Bread Stick....they call it Pain...which it is after half a day when you bite into it...

Don't worry about it, take your foodstuff as you would normally, apart from the 'infamous' ham sandwich debacle (which was a publicity stunt I believe) I'm not aware of anyone who's been searched for edible contraband, never mind actually had it confiscated and/or fined. When we went in to France in March no-one was interested in what we had on board at all.
