we are currently in Ile De R'e in Saint- Clement-Des-Baleneines, as the weather is very hit and miss we thought we would go for a walk from the lighthouse along the cycle way. There was a carpet of small black flies flying about 2" above the ground all flying in the same direction. There must have been a trillion, trillion trillion of them, the ground was completely black in places and at times my feet were covered. Fortunately they didn't seem to bite. Needless to say we moved on as quick as possible but the phenomenon went on for at least half a mile.

That would have driven me mad(der) - crowds of flies make me feel SO claustrophobic and panicky. Yukk!

Maybe fruit flies around the sea weed?

Edit: could be Kelp flies.

They could have come off the seaweed, I couldn't understand why they were all flying in the same direction, 2" above the ground. Swarms of flies are normally just "swarming".
