Hi,

We have purchased a Motorhome that has 2 single beds, (one with end corner diagonally cut out), and a couple of removable mattress pieces to make it into a double.

So some pretty bespoke fitted sheet and mattress protector/topper challenges.

I see companies like Jonic but they seem very expensive. Are there lower cost alternatives that others have experience of?

Thanks in anticipation.

Peter

It depends if you intend to use the bed as a double or just as two singles. With ours we opted to store the infill cushions at home and just use the two singles. We found that standard bunk bed sheets (available on line) fit well enough with the small bit of excess sheet just tucked under where the corner is tapered on one side. This may work for you and, thinking about it, if you do want to make up a double you could always fit a third bunk bed sheet up the middle or just try a king size sheet over the whole lot.

Thanks so much for the reply. Your suggestions are gratefully received. We prefer to use as a double. Of course in the showroom beds look smart "not made up" and whilst we are not too precious (!) it would be nice if the bed looked smart during the daytime. We plan on using a standard double duvet.
Cheers, Peter

We have the Dunelm fitted ties and for good measure these :

AUAUY 4 PCS Extended Bed Sheet Clips, Adjustable Bed Sheet Straps with Clips, Mattress Fasteners to Hold Sheets in Place, Elastic Bed Holder Corner Straps for Bedding, Sofa Cushion-White, 2 Clips

Which were about £3 from Amazon and help pull everything tight.

Ours has the Option for a Double but we prefer the Single set up than climbing the Ladder

Very easy to make fitted sheets, I make them for our vans and I can hardly use a sewing machine.

We have a Carthago E Line with a similar rear bed set up and we like to keep in the infill cushions to make what is effectively a super king bed wall to wall. We use two fitted single sheets plus a flat sheet tucked in for the middle section. A king size duvet then covers all completely. We struggled at first to work out what we needed but if you take measurements you should find something standard that will fit without having to make something bespoke.

Really quite easy to make if you can cut and sew in a straight line and you can get really nice quality for a lot less than having them made. I buy either a king or super king Egyptian cotton flat sheet - try John Lewis sale or TK Maxx for bargains - and then follow an internet tutorial, written or video according to your preference. A duvet cover would make 2 matching sheets. The longest part is the cutting out, but it's well worth the result.

We bought a set of Jonic sheets for our Dethleffs 640 ES. Which we pick up on the 6th. They arrived over the weekend. We haven’t been able to fit them yet to see exactly how well the fit but at £220 pounds to have them made I’m disappointed. Probably the least worth while item I’ve bought for ages.

They arrived in a tiny packet, about the size of an Amazon hard back novel. If they were any thinner you could see right through them. I’d say they were a waste of money.

If like us your beds have an access to a storage space for hanging clothes at the foot of the bed, it does make it more difficult to find fitted sheets. In hindsight, we should have looked for a local seamstress and have them adjust a set of single sheets from John Lewis or M&S.

On a much more positive note, we also bought two single sleeping bag packages from Duvalay with fitted mattress toppers built in. They were not cheap but we are happy with what we got.

I bought standard double sheets and took them to a seamstress/ dressmaker and had them cut to size and a zip installed so they don’t move when you get in bed work a treat for me

Duvalay made the fitted sheets for our Pilote 696D's drop down bed. I don't know what they cost (I'm the Engineering department...) but they fit well and seem to be made out of reasonable quality material. If they haven't done your van before (they hadn't ours) you need to give them accurate measurements or take the van to them (we did) so they can do the measurement - and then it's their problem if they don't fit!

Don't understand the use of a zip... can you explain where it is and what it does?

Most of the quilt covers we own have buttons at the bottom to close them. We do have one from Dunelm that has a zip instead of buttons. We don’t use that one regularly but it’s lasted a few years. Personally I would use poppers or buttons as zips on other equipment, seem to be the first thing to go and are quite temperamental.

The mattress covers we have are elasticated to hold them in place but using buttons or zips and enclosing the whole mattress would do the trick - as they are nowhere near as big as a home mattress (in our van anyway).

Depending on what the mattress lies on, you could have the fastenings on the bottom or one of the sides.

With our single bunks my wife bought two double duvet covers and two single duvets, she then sewed a line about two feet from the side opposite the buttons so that when you make the bed instead of struggling to tuck it in you double it so that you lie on the sewn part and that stops it falling off.

I thought I was baffled before, now I'm baffled AND befuddled. .

Sorry but you lost me some time ago... is this about mattress covers or duvet covers?

Make your life so much simpler and just use a mattress topper in a duvet cover. It has the added benefit of a comfier layer to sleep on, and no faffing about trying to get sheets to stay ticked under.

I think I need a diagram, or photos!
Imagine a single bed duvet cover. They usually have a row of buttons / zip / fastener at one end - usually at the bottom end of the bed. You put the duvet in the cover, fasten it and then put it over you when you go to bed.

We have two single mattress in van that run back to front. They tend to be deeper by some distance than a single duvet. However there is a good chance they have enough space inside to be put over a single mattress. You can get different size duvet covers so measure your mattress and see if it will go inside a duvet cover.

So we're talking about using duvet covers vs mattress covers, that's helpful clarification thank you but where does sewing ''a line two feet from the side opposite the buttons'' and lying ''on the sewn part to stop it falling off'' come in?

A call to Snuglux

They have the pattern for most major Motorhome beds.
Just give them your make and model.

Then choose your material and colour.
It all arrives by post a week or so later.

We have mattress toppers from them as well as two different sets of fitted sheets,
Bamboo for summer and egyption Cotton for winter.
(With two sets it means if we go away for weeks we can swap sheets without the need to do laundry and dry in the same day)
