Good Evening Funsters.
Does anyone have any schematic diagrams or a picture of where the above starter motor is located on my van please.
I am not sure exactly what I am looking for.
Think possibly the solenoid maybe faulty or even the whole starter, or we have a very bad earth connection.
Engine cranking is laboured and sometimes just not possible.
Other times it fires fine.
Have tested engine battery on charge, and tested cranking amps under load and both test ok.
Many Thanks.
Iain

If you have checked cranking amps and your readings were in spec, then I would replace the engine earth strap before doing anything else.
By the way, how did you check the engine cranking amps? That is not something most people would be able to do as you are talking about several hundred amps.

No idea if they are any good but on flea-bay THIS blue toothed enable 12V battery monitor will show the cranking amps.

Thanks for the reply.
I shall rephrase.
I put my multimeter onto volts and checked reading at 12.8v.
Then turned the engine and observed the reading at 11.9v with the meter.
I was led to believe that that a reading above 9 v would indicate my battery was ok.
I now believe that this is not the cranking amps as I stated and have that wrong, hence me asking for knowledgable help.
I understand it may be a bad earth and I have purchased new braided earth straps, and I am led to believe one connection maybe to the starter, hence my asking where it is.
As you may probably have deduced, I am to mechanics what King Herod was to Babysitting!
Thanks for your reply and any more advice is very gratefully received.
😊👍

It will be fixed to the engine in the bell housing between engine and gearbox.

Thanks Manic.
One of the issues I have is that I have YouTubed videos of starting problems and starter motors, and at this rate from what I have watched, I will end up removing the engine!
So much info, some relevant, some unnecessary and some, in my opinion, dangerous, but what do I know.
Hence me asking on the forum of the fountain of all Motorhome knowledge!
I have the Motorhome at home, on the drive with space to work , and safely but I am not happy messing when I don’t really have any serious knowledge.
The van, however, when started , runs lovely as I have always had services done, but think this problem may just be general wear and tear and age.
Any more help gratefully received. 👍😊

I think you are right in that it is the solenoid or if you are lucky a bad earth although I would expect that to make it happen every time.
Right first off a big rad cable goes to it direct from the battery, should be easy to spot. Earth lead is likely to be black or wire mesh from the engine to the chassis underneath. To get at the solenoid you need to disconnect the battery first, undo the electrical connections then remove the starter. It will be bolted in tight and you will need tools up to the job. Once out the solenoid can be removed and inspected. Often wear on the contacts causes problems and is a simple and cheap fix if you know what you are doing. As you started with I don't know what I'm looking at I suggest you get a mechanic to have a look for you.
