I am a newbie to motorhoming
Feeling a bit fed up this week. Not only has our main works van engine blown up (that's another story) our Fiat Ducato 1.9d W reg on a 2000 plate CI Auto-roller is also very sick.
We were advised that it needed a new clutch as it was on its highest setting. Having that done it was just as bad and was told we needed a new cable. So back it went for the cable to be replaced. We were not very happy as we would of thought they would have replaced the cable on its first visit.
It came out even worse, now with not just a little crunching in first but also in another gear. They adjusted the cable again and said how the synchro was shot and would need to be refurbished now that it has been aggravated. We took it on a short trip at Christmas and all seem ok. A couple of weeks ago we went from Dorset to the West Midlands. It now crunches in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and have been told the gearbox is knackered. It cant be repaired as nobody makes the parts anymore as the vehicle is too old.
Does anyone know of a gearbox magician? There must be someone somewhere that can refurb this gearbox or our we looking at selling our motorhome as spares? Any recommendations most welcome.

Just found him and he is in Chard. Just 45 mins away from us. Will definitely be on our call list. Thanks

Our first van was an X reg Ducato, we had the box refurbed at a place in Wakefield. Unfortunately I can't remember the firm's name, but they did a great job. Have tried looking on google maps and nothing rings any bells as this was 2016. Found a firm there called Able Transmissions, might be worth a phone call.

Good luck

The fact that nothing crunched before the new clutch would make me cautious....I would try and get a second opinion on the linkage adjustment
Having the syncro go on 3 gears simultaneously is a bit odd, especially with no prior difficulties in selection 🤔

Change the oil and use it for a while.

I've posted this before so search and you should find.
Basically I had a X230 on a 2000 plate started crunching 2nd to 3rd. Replaced oil no difference for first couple hundred then perfect for the next 20k miles until we sold it.

Take It to someone who knows what they are doing, and who cares. The previous garage clearly don’t, and have incorrectly setup your clutch system by the sounds of it.

Well we had months of searching for somebody that could help us with the gearbox. Getting more depressed looking at the motorhome just sitting on the drive. We had excuses from "it's to old" "it's too new" "my garage isn't tall enough for a motorhome" 😡😕 we eventually found Gear Change in Bridgewater. We had to have the synchro and the gearbox totally refebished. We have just been away for 3 consecutive weekends (it's been great to use the m/h again) and what a difference it is to drive. It's flying up the hills that we so struggled with before. We really cannot believe the difference a gearbox has made to what was once a very sluggish shed on wheels.

For anyone interested, Gloucester road gearboxes in Bristol also repair and refurbish these older gearboxes and clutches. I have found them excellent to deal with
