I thought I would look at various crossing prices for later this year in the hope that we can get away, wow the prices has fairly shot up. I usually go P&O and the last time it was under £50, cheapest now seems to be £106.25. DFDS and the Tunnel are also dearer, is this due to us leaving the EU or them trying to claw back some of their losses ?

Doing exactly what a lot of business will be doing using the pandemic as an excuse to rip off the punters, (sorry) recoup their losses.
Daughter went to dentist last week £165 for 1 filling (in the building for less than 30mins) when she challenged the price was told we have to completely deep clean the room between each patient. Yes of course you do.

Actually, they do.

A filling involves high speed drilling which is classed as aerosol generating and therefore the whole room and all surfaces must be wiped with a chlorine based disinfectant.

Takes ages and is a pain in the backside, then there is the PPE that must be worn that also costs a fortune.

Afraid to say, that cost isn’t that bad considering why they have to do between patients.

I had a filling at my Dentist just after the first lockdown and was charged £55.
I thought that was a really good deal for the Dentist and his assistant for about 30mins. Compare to one Solicitor or one Accountant or one hairdresser etc etc

It does seem a bit variable then, I have known some locally call it a PPE charge the extra money they put on top of the standard fee.

I have no knowledge of how and why they are charging, just that anything that involves a high speed drill will cost them dear to clean between patients.

Here it is very rare to find a dentist with only one patient room. Most have at least 2 & move between them.
When the wife had a filling a week or so back it is hairnet, paper over shoes, plastic disposable apron, mask which is obligatory anywhere outside, hand sanitiser before entering the room. Dentist & nurse now wear masks as well as face shields along with gloves etc. white fillings ,all they use here, 50€.
As soon as one patient leaves, the room is cleaned by the receptionist whilst the dentist is in the other room working.

You are in the UK and should know by now that they will use any excuse to increase prices as much as they can, its normal practice for the UK. They don't call it rip off Britain for nothing

Just read that Irish ferries are going to start a boat on the Dover Calais route. That might pull prices down a bit. I can remember Speedferries doing crossings cheaper than P&O bringing prices down, until they were put out of business.

Cripes! That's cheap. I've never managed anywhere near that.

Newhaven- Dieppe doesn't seem to have changed much.
As I'm over 60 I get 20% off these ( for example) fares........

£44 is what I used to pay Dunkirk-Dover. Been that price for years at cheapest time + 23 if you took flexible.
Those were the days☺️☺️Have a look now BUSBY .

How recently was that?
I used to pay 1s 7d for ten Woodbines. ;)

I have returned my P&O conessionary shares to the registrars, so that Dubai Ports refund the £120 they had been loaned in exchange for the 50% discount. It worked well before in that a Dover - Calais return in the van would be usually around £149. This year it was going to be around £250. I do not blame P&O, but it has confirmed that the Harwich - Hook of Holland route sailed by Stena is by far a much more pleasant and enjoyable route. Could we have an easier start than a 11pm start, a cabin for the night and disembarking at 7am? The cost, around £450 return, fully flexible, day crossings being much cheaper as cabins are optional. Incidently, the 6 hour ferry from Rostock to Trelleborg (Germany to Sweden) was £100 return........ incredible, what a beautiful country Sweden is for motorhoming)

They lost nothing, totally supported by support money, good of us to pop up the Ports of Dubai (P&O).

I have used P&O for years and years, initially with caravan but now with a Motorhome. I have also owned a property in France for almost 16 years so have made the double crossing about 6 times a year In car only. Prices for these crossings have always been MUCH cheaper than using the tunnel. This year there was only a £10 difference. PLUS last year P&O renaged on a promise to credit me with the difference in price between a booked crossing and one we had to change to due to Covid - very poor!
I appreciate the need to recoup monies lost due to the Pandemic but their pricing structure is now a rip-off. I ALWAYS. look for the best value due to the frequency of travel but now it’s going to be train not ferry.

I am finding now that motorhome/caravan sites/cl’s are also now charging extra electric if you have electric bikes and charge them up and extra for using dog poo bins, yet not reducing for no toilets or showers yet.

It's all an illusion, free market philosophy has gone, check for yourself the support has been ongoing and most likely continue.
Check out the last CEO pet lounge debacle. Still taped off, I could go on but likely to bore everyone that does not want to know

Glad I don’t have a dog as that is ridiculous.

We always use Dover Calais Ferry - its part of the holiday. We amble down to Dover and of late, park up near by. Get up early and get a 5.30am boat, have breakfast on the water then swing by the shops in France before heading off. Prices have varied but we usually pay about £150 return.
It used to be that a tank of fuel over in France paid for a good chunk of the ferry crossing. One once trip I met a truck driver from Kent who went over just to fill up in Belgium for the following week's work. Not any more - we brim in Dover before we set off.

I have a pal who lives at Ashford and works for Transmanche doing something with computers and gets unlimited tunnel crossings for £1.
Pre-lockdown he and his wife use to go over in their m/h for weekends and do virtually all their shopping 'over there'.
The downside is that he still has to have a job (and live in Ashford).
