Is it worth paying the extra to travel via roscoff instead of the Dover Calais route (£150 extra via roscoff)
We are trying to get to southern Spain fairly quickly but the Santander route (economy ship) in March is over £700 one way so that’s been ruled out.
Thoughts please.

Not a lot of saving in distance, about 125 miles, probably 2 hours driving to Irun if going that way, 220 miles saving via St. Malo.

If in a hurry I would use a Spanish crossing, 2 days and 650 miles less driving, yours may be class 3 on French autoroutes, do the sums, it's a personal choice.

Make sure you have your sea legs if you do the long crossing - can be a bit bumpy.

Tunnel and drive every time for me!

Living near Plymouth it's Roscoff for us but don't overlook the opportunity to explore Brittany if you decide to use it. Probably not at its warmest in March but if you can find time on the return you shouldn't be disappointed. Lots of history and some fine beaches. :)

We're taking the Portsmouth/Caen crossing on our way to Spain in a couple of weeks' time. We live in South Staffs (so on the west side of the country like you.)

The main advantage for us is that we find the drive to Portsmouth to be much easier and more pleasant (less unpleasant o_O) than the drive to Folkestone.

We'll take our time driving to Portsmouth on Thursday, stay overnight at the ferry port, and travel on the 8.15 am ferry on Friday, arriving in Ouistreham at 3 pm. We'll then drive to Nantes for overnight on Friday, giving us a good start on our journey south. £128 by Eurotunnel, £215 by ferry to Caen . Taking into account the saving in diesel on both sides of the channel, and the major saving in hassle, we think the extra cost is well worth it (y).

We like Newhaven to Dieppe shows this at £97.00 but if you ring up there is usually an over 60,s discount of 20% if it's still on normally catch the 18.00 ferry then overnight at the aire 2 mins drive from ferry then battle down through France

From Manchester it is around 300 mile drive straight down M6 and M5 to Plymouth. Compare that to a suggested route from home to Dover, then from respective French arrival ports to destination. Don't forget to factor in peage costs if you choose that route. We use Plymouth Roscoff every time, but then we live 20 minutes from the ferry terminal. It's a nice easy drive on dual carriageway down through Brittany, and toll free until past Nantes.

You know what your costs are so basically you need to cost the Dover route against the alternatives and see what the differences are. You do need to include all the costs. then you compare the differences with things like convenience, speed and decide what the balance for you is. My costs for Santander are less than yours, but even with the costs the club does save money on the return. For me it is the best way because I have a full or two day trip to the south coast and then the same at the other end so a days rest on the ferry is worth it for me but may not be for you
