Just had a quote to replace three tyres on the van. Nothing wrong with them except they are 7 years old. Seems wasteful but that's the advice the tyre manufacturer gives. £426.

Hi,
Three tyres seems an unusual number unless one is a spare as it's normally recommended to change them in pairs.
Cheers
Clive

One is indeed the spare. That's actually worn (but legal). I think I will get the new ones put on the front. But then I end up with a brand new spare.

Same here.. if the three are all on van I would be getting four unless fourth one is very new and you can get three other identical ones

I would be getting four

Are you sponsored by Continental?! I will stick with the three thanks. The two front ones are quite new (2 years). I will get them swapped to the back, have two of the new ones on the front and one as the spare unless anyone else has a better idea?

Best tyres should always be fitted on the rear.

One of the arguments for fitting new tyres on the front. Rear tyre wear is a lot less as they just have to follow the front. Front tyres are subject to wear as the van is driven pulling the van along scrubbing when using the power steering etc. So they wear out quicker lasting perhaps three times longer than the rear ones. So you could end up with 7 year old tyres on the rear. I always put the new on the rear rear to the front keeps the average age of the tyres with recommended limits.

It's somewhat counter-intuitive putting new ones on the rear for a FWD vehicle! What's the reason for that?

Rear end loss of traction is far worse then front end.... best tyres on the rear...👍🏼

Well you live and learn. Thanks for that! A lifetime of doing it wrong... New tyres on the back it is.

If you rotate the tyres regularly they will all have even wear, that's what I do. It does mean I have to fork out for 5 tyres every 3 to 4 years but the overall cost is the same.
With a spare I only need to rotate the spare & front tyres.
On my van there is not that much difference in front or rear wear rates.

Any reason you picked Continental..????

Somebody has thought of collecting test results & publishing them here.

For scenarios were the axles have quite a large difference in tread depth, some of my takeaways are: -
- best tyres at front = shorter braking distances.
- It is hard to spot rear axles aquaplaning and if rear are low in tread depth this is pretty dangerous.

Conclusion, rotate tyres when tyre depths start to become different

EDIT: RWD or FWD same in general but have different pro & cons
