We like small, independent festivals with folkie / acoustic / similar vibe. Ideally with some other things to do than the music, like talks, learning how to do stuff, wild swimming etc.

Bonus for good food. Bonus for South East as why drive a lone way for worse weather :)

Any recommendations?

They do look to fit the bill, thanks!

I think wild swimming might have disappeared with the demise of Port Eliot Festival? However, you might want to check out Larmer Tree Festival near Shaftesbury Dorset. It’s a small/medium sized festival, very family orientated, nice vibe and plenty of folk bands. One of my favourites.

Thanks, that does look good. What‘s the music like?

I think the line up for 2020 is on the website. It’s usually a eclectic mix with a few we’ll known headliners and a mix of stuff on the 3 or 4 marquee stages. Acoustic and folk is usually very well represented as are activities like story telling, comedy, literature, craft workshops and talks about a range of topics. Big field for campervans with elsan disposal, toilets, water and some mobile shower units. I hate crowded festivals, queues and hoards of drunks - this festival doesn’t have those problems.

I will just put in a plug for bromyard folk festival early sept. Mid sized majority folk music as the name suggests. Other than that afraid it meets none of your criteria but it's in a nice rural area so opportunity to incorporate into a touring holiday.

Broadstairs Folk week would seem to tick all your boxes, including the wild swimming

For food other than the stands that pop up for Folk Week, there are 29 restaurants in the town, half a dozen chippies, a handful of cafe's, at least 4 micropubs, about a dozen normal pubs, one Witherspoons, no maccy D's or burger kings.

FYI - The camping sells out fast, so you probably need to get a place this side of Easter

Both good ideas thanks. We nearly Morris danced at Broadstairs last year...

There were some interesting Morris troops there last year.
I had no idea that Heavy Metal Steam Punk Morris existed !

(Motorhead does Morris cross over)

I was staying on a small village site in France last July and about tea time half a dozen tenters who had arrived during the day, gathered together. They were attending a Hurdy Gurdy festival nearby. They played until about 11 p.m. then had to stop when the damp evening air put their instruments out of tune (not that I could tell ). Touring folk on the site of various nationalities brought out chairs, wine and nibbles to listen to them. A fun-packed and most memorable occasion.
