Here we are in cold, damp Italy and have not really researched where to go and which part we might enjoy. The state of the roads, the weather and the crazy drivers are not helping, but maybe some advice might turn our stay round. :pray2:

We have another 10 days left before our booked crossing to Greece. We are currently in Pompei and about to visit some of the sites including visiting Mt Vesuvius. After that we would like to see some real Italy, inland or coast, where we might get our cycles out or enjoy some walking.

Would prefer not to to go too far back up North or too far south but anywhere around the ankle would be great.

We loved Sorrento - stayed there and caught the bus along the Amalfi coast

The trick with Italy is to use pay roads wherever possible, they're not expensive and are much cheaper than visiting the chiropractor

Enjoy your adventure!

From Pompeii we went on to Paestum, a bit further round the coast, which has quite spectacular greek (yes greek) remains. We cycled around there. Much quieter than around Amalfi.

Why not try Herculaneum, I believe it has much better preserved ruins than Pompeii .Pompeii had all the volcanic ash and Herculaneum got the mud so things were not so badly damaged .

Another tick for Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast Sandra. We drove the van down and booked into a campsite in Marina del Conte - but I wouldn’t advise driving there in your van - it was hairy enough in ours!

Hope you have a lovely time in Greece - we’re green with envy and will be keeping up with your Grecian Odyssey with interest! xx

We have been using the toll roads where possible, which saves our fillings but then we miss the little towns and villages.

I think we should have stayed in the north of Italy a bit longer, but the weather has been so cold we were desperate to get south......Where it is still flipping cold. Currently sat in the van looking at Mt Vesuvius with snow on it!

If you go to Sorrento you must try the Amalfi Lemon Ice Cream - it’s yummy

That definitely has possibilities, thank you. There looks to be a nice ACSI site there too.

From the top of Vesuvius the view over the bay of Naples is wonderful. Obviously only on a clear day:D

A day trip to Capri is worth it, not too much traffic and plenty to see. Go from either Naples or Sorrento you should be able to take you bikes on the train from Pompii and on the Ferry. A must is the boat trip around the island, sheer cliffs! A word of warning though, take your own food and drink. V Expensive in Capri city slightly cheaper in Anacapri.

We love the area south of Sorrento but would leave the van and use other transport to explore.
Our favourite places to visit are Positano,Amalfi, Ravello,Maiori and Minori. The scenery all the way along the coast road down from Amalfi to Salerno is spectacular.
Sorrento has Easter processions the first of which starts Thurs before Easter around 3am !

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations (except @BreweryDave :sneaky:).

@motorhomer we are tucked into the lovely Camping Villaggio dei Pini, right on the beach, an easy walk to see the Paestum ruins, the approach road was NOT pothole hell, there is NOT litter everywhere and it looks like there will be some good cycling to be had too.

We had to do a 62 point turn to shoe horn our van onto a pitch and it is raining again, but hey, you cannot win them all. :hi5:

After surviving scootering into Pompei and part way through Naples, then up the twisty road to the top of Mt. Vesuvios, if there is a break in the weather we may do some of the Amelfi coast, or we may decide we have had enough of touristy Italy and just explore around here.

Leave the moho on the site. Take the coast railway to Sorrento then ferry to Capri for the day or a bus trip along the Amalfi coast, or do both on separate days. Then take the same railway the other way to Naples.

Don't try to take the moho any further towards Sorrento. We did and it took us a week to pluck up the courage to drive back.

When we went we got the train from Pompeii and then the bus around amalfi. Sounds good but ......... We had been advised to get the Hopper bus ticket so we could stop at various points en route. So we did. Unfortunately we had to queue for over an hour to get the bus in the first place and all the busses were full. So we did not dare to get off en route as we would not have been able to get on another! So we just went to the end. I think for us this sums up Italy. It is a beautiful country, with super food, but lots of hassle!

Yikes......we're setting off for Greece April 10th....driving through Italy to Brindisi to catch the ferry to Igumenitsa in Greece. We thought we would drive down through Pisa, Florence, Bolsena as far as Pompeii on the east side...stopping here for a few days to take trips out to Naples and maybe Rome....then across to Igumenitsa stopping at Trani and Specchiolla on the way. Italy is suddenly sounding not so attractive...perhaps we'll spend a bit longer in the south of France

Wow Italy is getting a bashing here. We go every year and been to many of the usual tourist spots on the West side and yes the roads off the major highways are in poor repair (please take a look at the roads in the UK they are bad) The area we use most is the Marche region on the Adriatic side. Yes again there are the well documented resorts of Rimini etc but get to some of the less frequented places down the coast Pesaro/Fano etc and not forgetting the Cornero Peninsular, The interior of the region contains some of Italy's finest scenery in the Appenines, with amazing places like the Frassasi Caves, Monte Neurone, Globe of Peace, Furlo Gorge, just to mention a few. We do go in early Sept so do have to admit to not going in the high season, maybe this the secret to enjoying Italy. In this region you are already on the east side for the ferries to Greece etc, so get off the main A14 motorway and explore Italy's best kept secret, hardly ever covered on our recent television Italian programmes it may surprise you.

We're off to Italy in a couple of weeks time, following an aborted attempt last year. Reading all the tips etc. with interest.

Greece is also on our wish list but not this year.

Not yet Ger. I am trying my best to catch up with my thread but have to rely on site wifi which keeps going off.

We sail to Greece tomorrow at 7:30pm. We have met up with Kath and Bill and put a plan together for the first couple of days, then we will probably go our separate ways and join up again somehere on the Peloponnese.

Lovely plans Sandra. Hope the crossing is good. Are you going on the ferry where you camp on the deck?

Enjoy the trip and I’ll be watching this thread closely! Love to you both and to Izzy xx
