Explosion in my motorhome

3 years 30,000 miles UK and Europe.. Campsites and off Grid.
There I was relaxing with my areopress coffee made with freshly ground beans and suddenly "BANG" and pieces of glass flying everywhere.💥💥💣🤯

Took a while to comprehend what had happened but eventually realised that the glass cover on the Domestic gas stove had exploded because I'd left the flame on low and closed the top. 🙄

It had spread 2 metres across the van. Lucky I wasn't near it!

Why on earth do they not have those mechanism connected to a valve that shuts the gas off when you close the lid???

It was a big clean up job - I can see it being like when you have a car windscreen shattered - we'll no doubt find bits of glass hidden in places for years!

So - now to find out how much Dometic will shaft me for a new one 😥

I should have taken some pictures of the aftermath but I was in shock.

Here's the lidless stove after the clean up operation though...

That question has been asked before.

Two issues:
1. Cost!
2. Even if the hob is still hot and you close it, there have been occasions when the glass has shattered. That got us in our first van unedr warrantly and they would not replace as it had in small writing to ensure the hob is cold before closing the lid.
 
Look on the bright side, ........ at least it reminded you that you had left the burner still lit, you could have run out of gas if it was left on. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Probably cheaper to buy a complete stove!.
Were you the person with the exploding BBQ?

Well this one doesn't - there is clearly nothing connecting the lid and hinge to any mechanism of any kind.
 
I would look into cutting one out of an aluminium sheet, or get one cut for me using stainless steel. Many years ago I cut a top which covers the left half of our hob so as to give us an extra surface to stand items on, which we drop into place after lifting the glass lid. We had never used all three burners at once so it was no problem to cover one up.

My friend had an almost identical experience while touring in France two years ago. His was a self build conversion, he left a plastic kettle near-by and this caught fire. We was away at the kitchen area when the explosion happened, luckily he had left the whoosh bang open and a nearby camper used their fire ext to put out the fire. God only knows what would have happened if the door was locked and the fire took hold with a 25 underslung gas. Same as you spent the next 4 hours clearing the soot and glass, looked like a bomb site. He spent E100 for a replica replacement lid. I tested our Hymer with all gas lit on full and put down the lid. Cut-out straight away.
 
I have the same hob in my 2019 Burstner, when my lpg regulator failed it blew the seals. I was informed this particular hob is no longer in production.
 
Possibly a Perspex or aluminium one?

That shouldn’t happen with modern regulators as they must now have over pressure protection devices fitted .
That’s why you should never use the cheap outdoor use single stage regulators on leisure vehicles.
Liquid state LPG can cause regulators to fail if a refillable LPG system is overfilled ⚠️

I guess it's a money maker for them. They know it's going to happen and they know you will buy a new glass regardless of the extortionate cost.
It should be a compulsory item for safety......but we know that isn't going to happen.
 
The regulator was the one the van came with, it failed three days out of warranty. Truma said it was because I had an underslung lpg tank even though I had an inline filter.

Been there, in Pilote a few years ago, replacement cost exorbitant, no interconnect between lid and gas supply as I might've expected. Replaced, obvs, but have been super cautious ever since. I was on my own too, so I blame the Mrs for not being there to remind me to turn off the burner ... :rolleyes:

Well, yes and no. Just been searching and initially found they were around £120 - £140 but have come across a couple of places that seem to do them for £57 and £62. :unsure:
 
I was sitting peacefully sipping a large scotch whisky, suddenly the glass in my hand exploded showering me in small cubes of glass and booze.

Not sure what happened, could be the warmth of my hand and the chill from evaporating alcohol stressed the glass until it shattered. But when I swept up all the glass there seemed to be more than would make up one glass. My theory is a trans-dimensional anomaly caused another glass to materialise in exactly the same place.

Sacrilege!. We are weight-limited but still insist on proper cut glass tumblers for drinking whisky. I hope it wasn't malt whisky! You didn't put ice in, did you?
 
I don't get why they put glass tops on cookers or sinks in vans
