Just booked journeys for annual ski trip Next April. Yep. I know it’s peak time, school worker here sadly. Outgoing on the tunnel….£203, 2 of us And £100 in diesel From Poole So about £300 total. Returning on the ferry Cherbourg to Poole…£210 and home in 5 minutes. Unfortunately the ferry doesn’t run until the 1st of April which is a fraction too late. Crazy prices, surprised at the tunnel costs. On the upside, I am changing my job next year hopefully So can travel anywhen.

Nothing new to me. The tunnel has been expensive for a long time. Not convenient for us

Have you looked at Newhaven - Dieppe? Or Portsmouth?

So the tunnel is better value then. 35min crossing and cheaper. Good news but I hope they don’t read this, and put frequent traveler back on.

Yep, the crossing timings are no good as we have a 15 hour drive Over 2 days. We have done the journey many times and have our stops down to a tee, I am just a little surprised at the cost of the tunnel. It used to be the cheaper option even with the 4 hour drive from Poole and we always liked the flexibility of times. That said, we have had a few lengthy queues the last couple of crossings and their lack of information is appalling So not overly impressed of late.

Not with our 4 hour drive to get their and £100+ in diesel costs. I love the simplicity of the tunnel and the short crossing but 5 motorways and then the New Forest roads are a nightmare  If only the Barfleur started one day earlier from Poole.:( We are driving to the Alps and the distance is very similar from both Calais and Cherbourg. Straight down basically. :giggle:

We have a Tunnel crossing booked and are driving to the Spanish Med Coast
Simply put Tunnel is £130 for Dec out
the Same day Brittany Ferry to Santander £550+ cabin we are expecting 3 tanks of Diesel from HOME to the Med so £350ish

Who know where we will depart from to get home but that's not until March

True and I have to drive through Dorset ….no motorway, crappy roads and the 5 motorways to get to Folkestone. Whereas, Poole ferry, less than a mile but it doesnt operate until 1st of April, one day too late to try and get out late ski trip on the decent snow

I understand that, but for us that don’t live near you, the tunnel is better value. They can’t/won’t lower their price for your choice of place to live. For me it’s about the same. Poole, Calais, or Portsmouth.

I would think that ET can charge more than the others as it’s a shorter/faster crossing, and much more flexible about when you turn up, and when you cross.

Blimey, that’s nuts. I can’t wait to change my job, desperate to at least have the chance of holidaying off peak…..and no pesky school kids

I agree, the tunnel always was better value. That’s why we have used it many many times. But it’s not any more which was the point I was trying to make. Going from Poole used to be a lot more expensive than the tunnel but my booking today has just proved different.
I must say your comment about my choice of place to live seemed a bit harsh and I am not quite sure what you meant by that. I was born here and work here. I was just simply stating that the difference in journey costs has surprised me today.

I’m not meaning to be harsh at all. All I’m saying is that as a way to cross to France, you have shown that ET is better value, than other options. I understand it now isn’t for you, but we don’t all live in Poole, and that ET only have to price to be competitive, they don’t take into account where we live.

According to the Michelin app the toll charges from Calais to Frejus (med) would be £141.36 for class 2, unless you are planning on going on a non-toll route?

Dont think there would be a lot in it.

That’s why I said I was surprised as it was always the best option, despite living here but not any more and I couldn’t work out why. It is now more expensive even before our fuel costs which is odd.

I agree ET have priced themselves out for many who live near South Coast Ferry Ports particularly now with fuel prices. The distance saving from travel to embarkation port and eventual destination for those of us down here has swung the Ferries in our favour. Plus I rather enjoy the Ferry trip!

I quite like ferry food oddly

On the tunnel the cheapest day is Tuesday cheapest time 05.59 or after 160.00 btn £139.00 and £144.00.
Living only an hour away, for me it's a no brainer for the convenience and speed of crossing.

I just don't get some of these figures. I got prices from DFDS, (Dover/Calais), and Eurotunnel in February and again in September. Both times DFDS was easily cheaper.

Yep, done that too. Worked well until they built a new Aldi on my doorstep :LOL:

You can pay for your Aldi shopping with a Tesco credit card as we do to get Tesco points.
Really if ever shop at Tesco, and that includes their fuel, and we did two tunnel crossings this year on Tesco points and just about to book another crossing for next year again with Tesco points.

That’s a good idea. I have to say that with the Covid debacle, Eurotunnel were fantastic. We had crossings with Tesco points and they changed them at least 3 times if my memory serves me right with no problems at all.

We pay for everything on our Tesco credit cards throughout the year and just pay off the bill in full at the end of each month, as the Tesco strap line says ................. :giggle:

Does the App allow you to obtain the cost for different vehicle classes?

I know that the website doesn’t as I can’t obtain prices for a tag axle.

I'm wondering why you are doing the Tunnel going outwards instead of ferry from Dover which would be a lot less.

The Michelin app will probably not help you as your vehicle with axle configuration is unlikely to be listed on the site.

This site will, you should be able to use the google translate function to translate the main info, however assuming you are over 3.5 gvw, and the three axles, you would need to chose the drop down “poids-lourd” (which is over 3.5 t GVW), and “camion à essieux” (3 axle truck). There is no motorhome option as usually in France they are under 3.5 t GVW and 2 axles.

This would push the toll price to 328 Euros (Calais to Frejus), on a 3 axle truck (over 3.5 t)

Hope this helps.

We used to pay for everything with our Tesco credit card for the points however we've got Chase bank cards which are giving 1% cashback which we use for purchases other than at Tesco as the 'return' is better even when tripling the Tesco value, so we just use the Tesco card for Tesco purchases now.

Timings really. We have a long drive to the Alps and need the quickest route. We always use the 06.00 crossing, sometimes earlier. Even that couple of hours can make the drive better. It’s about 15 hours in total to the campsite So we try to do 10 on the first day. Then we stay in an aire and arrive the campsite on the second day, hopefully in tim3 to get the ski hire and lift passes sorted. It is cheaper, by about £80 It’s just the frequency of crossings that appeals.

I checked last week for a potential trip across the channel between Christmas and New Year. Eurotunnel was double what DFDS was. We have used Eurotunnel for years for the ease and thought it was only a little more expensive. But double the price of ferry means we will be using the ferry for the next trip. I do wish the frequent traveller would return.
