Eurotunnel Calais today

We just boarded on ealier train nobody around. Nobody asked for forms but we had border force come in the van
Presumably if you were transiting from another country you would now have to isolate!!!!!
My niece lives in France but is a student in Glasgow I said that it might be a good time to get a cheap flight as a lot will have travelled early and cancelled their original booking.

You can transit through a non exempt country as long as you dont stop or you no one apart from the persons travelling enter the vehicle. So you can travel from Germany to UK through eurotunnel and dont have to quarantine for 14 days

Apparently the ferries are complaining that anyone travelling via ferry has to quarantine and the tunnel passengers dont🤔

Ferry firms furious as passengers who drive straight through France must still quarantine

Exclusive: ‘The government has not made the ferry industry aware of this’ – Abby Penlington of Discover Ferries

Britain's ferry firms say they have not been told of a government ruling that UK-bound travellers lose quarantine exemption if they sail back from France or the Netherlands.

Both countries were removed from the list of exempt nations on Saturday.

British holidaymakers driving back from countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Italy can avoid the need to self-isolate for 14 days if they drive straight through a "high-risk" country such as France, Belgium or the Netherlands.

Quarantine-free transit is allowed for cars only if the driver and passengers do not mix with others during the journey. For example, they must not stop for a meal or drink.

Some motorists had hoped that driving straight through from Germany and boarding a ferry at a French or Dutch port immediately would save them having to self-isolate on return to the UK.

But the Department for Transport (DfT) has told The Independent that because the occupants of a car must leave the vehicle before sailing - for safety reasons - they are deemed to have mixed with others while the ship is tied up in a French or Dutch port.

They are therefore liable for 14 days of self-isolation on arrival in the UK.

In contrast, Eurotunnel customers can claim exemption, so long as they follow the transit rules while passing through France and any other "no-go" nation, such as Belgium or Luxembourg.

Abby Penlington, marketing director of Discover Ferries, said: "The government has not made the ferry industry aware of this, and if it is the case, it is confusing for passengers and would put the ferry industry and Eurotunnel on different playing fields.

"As such, we will be seeking urgent clarification from the Department of Transport and Foreign Office."

Eurotunnel even says that pet owners, who are required to attend an office in the Calais terminal, retain exemption because the encounter takes place after passing through UK frontier formalities - which are "transposed" to France.

Vincent, in the social media team for the company's Shuttle operation, tweeted: "Good news, the pet reception office is considered as border controls so if you come from a country not involving quarantine and you have just drove thru without stopping in a country which is on the list you are then exempt of self isolating."

The two optimal German locations for UK-bound Eurotunnel travellers to refuel are the city of Aachen and the town of Perl - just across from the village of Schengen in Luxembourg.

Calais is three hours and 30 minutes' drive from Aachen, an hour longer from Perl.

Meanwhile Brittany Ferries has urged the French government to drop its plan to introduce a tit-for-tat quarantine for arrivals from the UK.

The French ferry firm normally carries 2.6 million passengers each year, of whom 85 per cent are British.

The director general of Brittany Ferries, Christophe Mathieu, said: "This has already been a disastrous summer season for us and all the businesses in northwest France that rely on the friendly British invasion each summer.

"If such (quarantine) measures are implemented it would be an exercise in self-harm for France plc, damaging our business, as well as those of thousands of others in the regions we serve."

The DfT has also confirmed that passengers using Basel airport, serving Switzerland's third-largest city, must self-isolate for a fortnight on return to the UK.

The airport is located inside French territory, two miles from the Swiss border, and is connected by a route douaniere ("customs road"). But because it is in France, the quarantine rules apply.

Yes so can I however the tunnel says the pet check in is after the passport check but that was not true at least when we last came through in March it’s before you get to any barriers for checks.😊

I can't see how as both on ferry / tnnel an animal is classed as being in the UK once documents checked . The owner can't then still be "In France" It's nonsense.

Same as the ferries. Dog is classed as within the UK even if delayed & exceeds the 120 hours before boat departs.

As to tnnel is better than ferry I can't see it as you are still breathing the same air as others in the tunnel?

Yes it a nonsense I suppose although breathing the same air you are confined to your van so not actually in contact.😊
I believe that anyone entering UK from or through no go countries should quarantine There would be no argument then😊👍🧐

You can do the pet passport as a drive in, we done it this way a few weeks ago. They just pass the scanner through the window like they do the ferries so no contact.

No pets so not a problem to me,,BUSBY,,

Makes sense to me. On a ferry will be people who have been socialising in “naughty“ countries and be happy to go home and quarantine. So if other have done what was needed to avoid quarantine they can’t then mix with the others which they have to do on a ferry. Unlike the tunnel where we are sealed away in our own vehicle, far more than two meters away from anybody.

I did pet check from MH on Saturday. We did the drive through and the dog was scanned through the window. It is before passport control though so they are not right in stating that it is British territory.

No but apparently part of passport control so they say you are on English side.😊

We travelled to France on the tunnel last Wednesday and had to download, print out and fill in a Covid19 declaration saying we were free of symptoms and had no contact with anyone with CV.
Went through customs and no one asked to see the form and it was never even mentioned, a complete and utter waste of our time. 🙄

Border force had gloves and masks on. Full check bed down cupboards etc and bike rack which I forgot to check and we had a stowaway in the bikes last year . Stupid me !

Safer to not put the cover on your bikes when returning to uk.BUSBY.

We went through on the Friday after i.e last week, we wasn’t asked to fill any form prior to leaving UK, or asked for one. The check in was rammed, the place was bursting (mainly cars) with the departure lanes full all heading into France.

Exactly my point if the border police search the van in France you have contacted them so ought to then quarantine. It would be very annoying.

When you think about it if the pet check-in is in UK territory then if you are transiting France its ok and you don't need to quarantine on your return but if you are leaving France about to self quarantine you didn't ought to meet anyone in UK territory so ought not to enter the pet check-in!!!!!!!
Its all a bit bonkers isn't it.

I arrived home at 5pm on Saturday. At 4am on Saturday morning I was parked on a quiet Aire and I mingled with no one in France before I got on the tunnel. As I was in France rather than Germany I must presumably quarantine, it's all a bit bonkers tbf.

So when would you have set the cutoff so have not to have been "bonkers" ?? and yes you do have to quarantine, did you not understand that part ??

The ferry I use is usually just truck drivers & east europeans, & as we all know truck drivers have a natural immunity as no one knows of any international drivers who have ever contracted the virus, so I should be safe.:giggle: Anyway as we are always checked inside 3 x at Dunkirk there isn't much point in driving through attempting to dodge quarantine as as soon as they enter you are ******

that means quarantine then if they've been in it. :(
