Hi all ,,,, I'm at that time of year of looking for insurance. I need European cover as we have a number of trips to France etc.
Currently with Comfort and awaiting their renewal paperwork but in the mean time I've been looking at the comparison sites and when you look at the European cover it says

"We will provide the minimum cover which is required by law in:" and then list all the EU states

Does this mean that I will only have 3rd party insurance while abroad or will my fully comp insurance be in place while abroad

Comfort paperwork due this week so i'll see what that says

I guess it varies between countries. For example, the minimum required by law in the UK (or was, it might have changed but I don't think it has) is what's called Road Traffic Act insurance - which covers injury to other people only, it does not include their vehicles or any other property.

I suspect you will have comprehensive insurance but it will include any funnies, such as in Germany you must have "any driver" insurance so you are covered if your vehicle is stolen and drives into someone. Thus in Germany, you might have more cover than you do in the UK.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Your 'Certificate of Insurance' for the UK has always also said your cover is valid for RTA only! - because that's all that's required by law and it's only to prove your legality on the road and not for any other purpose whatsoever.

However as DBK says - the motor policy itself covering the vehicle will state what cover it gives you, wherever you happen to be!

I think if you read further into the policy you will find both Comfort and Safeguard give full comp cover in Europe.. Not just third party.. (y)

I am with comfort insurance and it includes comprehensive European cover which I believe is standard (not sure you can even have UK only cover with them(?)). If your van is over 3 years old (or out of warranty) they also do what looks to be an excellent UK and European breakdown cover for an additional £62 which I also took.

It all comes under 'EU rules' which state that what you have in your home country is the same in every EU state BUT they also allow countries to make clients ask/pay for 'additional ' countries & regulate the time period spent in them. So the Uk insurance companies insist that you tell them & pay moe for the green card. It is possible that if you do not get authorisation/green card from your UK country then it will revert to the next one down which would be TPF&t if you had full comp.
Here you just have to ask & they supply an A4 green card signed & date on companies behalf by the agent & at no exrtra cost , for the full insurance period & covering everywhere including Morocco & The one the UK won't touch(?) Bosnia-Hertzogovinia.

I would be interested in the thread as we are going for two years, the UK does not supply green cards, and trust me in some countries it will cost you dearly. I rode a motorbike to Istanbul with a mate from Germany. He had a green card flew through, we had to pay in several non EU countries extra. Turkey cost us £300 for two days ( Never go through a border on a Sunday ) I badgered my insurance company for weeks to get a green card, no way, so its interesting NFU will do

As said most of the Mororhome insurers will give you full comp cover. Never rely on basic 3rd party cover it only covers you for injury to 3rd party persons it does not cover the vehicles.

@Smue going for 2 years I think you will need Full timer insurance Comfort are about the only company that do it, expect to pay 2 - 4 times what you would for normal insurance & I don't think they will cover vehicles over 10 years old (maybe 15 not sure) on the Full Time policy.

Our comfort insurance only increased by a tenner this year and that was due to insurance tax so stayed with them.

I think they do for places like Morocco, in their breakdown cover they include Morocco but you have to pay yourself then claim it back a lot of companies won't cover you at all.

Because motorhome insurance is specialised I wouldn't think the normal insurance comparison sites are much use. There's not many companies anyway - and several of them use the same yunderwriter - so you're better off contacting them directly. And then wonder why there is such a disparity in the quotes!

Have used Comfort for a few years now and they've been very helpful, as well as being good value.

Read your policy carefully.
In the policies I've read, the phrase "covered for minimum in EU countries" is followed by a clarification / expansion:

We will provide the minimum insurance needed by the relevant law to allow you to use your motorhome:

# in any country which is a member of the European Union; and

# in any other countries which have made arrangements to meet the insurance conditions of, and are approved by, the Commission of the European Union.

# while your motorhome is being transported (including loading and unloading), between ports in countries where you have cover, as long as your motorhome is being transported by rail or by a recognised sea route of not more than 65 hours.

# We will provide the cover shown on your schedule when you visit any country which is a member of the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Serbia or Switzerland (including Liechtenstein). There is no limit on the number of trips you make in any period of insurance but each trip must be for no more than 180 days.

My emphasis.
The emphasised section means that the cover is equal to that described in your "schedule" i.e. if you bought fully comprehensive, that will apply in the regions mentioned.
