Ive got a old mini i want to fit a kill switch to as they are so easy to hot wire i want to earth the coil positive terminal on a switch to earth .If i go direct to earth its going to be a short and blow a fuse what do i need between switch and earth to stop this i assume a resistor of some sort ?

No, you earth the other side of the coil, the side going to the points, then when the coil is grounded it never see's the points open and doesn't create a spark for the plugs - it's better this way as if you open circuit the ignition side, the old school thief just uses his jumper wire with croc clips on from the positive side of the starter solinoid to power the coil that way
Just make sure your wiring under the bonnet is neat and hidden other wise he just has to cut your extra earth wire to start it
 
a shut off tap in the fuel line might be better it will start but stop once float chamber is empty, unless you have a good bonnet lock it would be easy to get over the kill switch with a couple of bits of wire
 
Used to hide a simple toggle switch under dash and intercepted a wire to key barrel.

You can't use a resistor, it will just get warm and not do anything to the points side voltage. Maybe blowing a fuse would be the best option 🤔

Your correct that is what ive done ive added a wire below the nut that holds the spade terminals which will at least be un noticable to anyone hot wiring from solenoid to coil

unfortunitely all the fuel line is exsposed from fuel cell to bulkhead
 
im sure i had a motor bike that killed the ignition to earth i might just go for double switches on the fuel pump one hidden

back to the drawing board on this if i fused it it would break the link to earth when it blew

You could put a 10 ohm resistor between the battery and + side of the coil and then short the + side to earth without blowing a fuse but it might weaken the spark.
 
Then even if the thief removed the immobiliser switch it still wouldn't start 😎

you know who would be the person most likley to forget the switch and pop the fuse would be i would need an ammo belt for fuses lo

I'd be able to start any of the above ideas really easily and I'm an idiot so I'd suggest something mechanical like a steering, brake or clutch pedal lock.
 
You can get a positive battery terminal with a bit you unscrew and take with you. I've got a late original mini unfortunately it has fuel injection under the bonnets got loads of electrical stuff they tacked on its just as it came from the factory but looks DIY!

Just pop the distributor cap off, remove the rotor arm and take it with you.
That's what I did for years with my 1968 VW Beetle.

No at least a £1 or maybe more, after all is the Mini fitted with a Lucas 25D or a later 45D or have they swapped it out for a Bosch GL190 or maybe even a 123ignition electronic distributor ?

Any more than 50p at mates rates I'd probably just nick it. I fitted a Sparkrite to mine to save the points a bit, never went full 123 as that seemed to be pointless 😂🤣😂

I always fitted this to any of my dad's cars back in the 60's & 70's normally put in a fog light switch on the dash, a thief is not likely to think the car will not start unless the fog light is switched off
