During my time working at the roadside I was called to a Renault 5 that had been hit by a Pheasant. It hit the top of the windscreen denting the edge of the roof and penetrated the windscreen. There was blood and feathers inside the car including on the driver and passenger.
A colleague of mine was working in on the A1 in North Yorkshire and a deer leapt over a fence landing on the bonnet of his Transit. It rolled up the windscreen on to the roof. The damage nearly wrote off the van.
If that had been a car it landed on it could have been fatal.

Worst one I’ve personally experienced was some years ago driving into Birdcage Walk by Buck House in my 2CV and a kamikaze pigeon stuffed itself into the front grill. Being air cooled with a large ish fan permanently churning away in there, plus the cabin having hot air blown over the cylinders, we ended up with feathers all over us. How we laughed - not!

I worked with a single chap who loved his cars…
He hit a pheasant in his first sports car (think it was an S2000), and it did some quite shocking damage…
He then has a TVR which had the front destroyed by a badger….
Only to be beaten by the deer that destroyed the whole side of his Boxster..
When he stepped out of the boxster, he came face to face with a large stag, and was so angry he shouted at the stag to “go away quickly “ which it promptly did!
As a supportive group of colleagues we gave him the nickname of The wildlife officer….
It was a while before he saw the funny side!

A few years back my boss was travelling into the office through The Trossachs when a red deer bounds over the fence at the side of the road and into the front of his Land Rover Defender. Fortunately, for him and not the deer, he had bullbars on the front!

Being an officer in The TA he thinks to himself I can't leave that lying here in the middle of the road so up on the roof rack it goes! Strapped down he heads off.

Arrives at the office and parks in the car park. After an hour of so he's "politely" requested to remove the offending article from the car park as it's dripping blood all over the place!

A lot of young pheasant and partridge are bred in captivity and released into the countryside from release pens to add to the population of game available for the shooting season.

These birds are shellshocked when released and don't have the survival instincts of wild birds.
Many of them die from starvation, are eaten by other animals, or killed on the road before the shooting season even begins.

They are not even native to the UK. They should be culled. Pain in the butt.

Loads of them nesting in the verges on our country road and regularly see a flattened corpse.

I read somewhere that pheasants can only see through one eye at a time which is why so many get run over on the roads.

Not sure if that is true.

Sorry you have this hassle CazPaul

Last Wednesday, M5 came out to overtake a lorry .
A young Hawk decided to take of from its perch on the central crash barrier right in front of me ,a spit second later quite a bang ,and a mucky screen .
Pulled into Taunton services to clean up the gore.
Thought I would pull it out till I looked closer at it the day after ,not cost effective.
Small bird v 68mph quite bent on leading edge.
Lucky to find a pretty good replacement £54 Inc delivery

……..and I thought that you only loathed lovely fluffy wuffy cute pigeons
Nope, Pheasants are on the list too. But they are only a 3/10 on the irritant scale. Pigeons are at the 9/10 level.
No other birds are on the list :) :p

No, not on my list. They have never bothered me. I rarely go to the beach and haven't lived near a tip.

I’m hoping you can get a screen easier than me. I got a chip in my carthago screen and the insurer tells me there are none in the uk and none available from Carthago in Germany so may be waiting a while!! They may just be stalling as no doubt it will hurt them to pay out!

Yes, we know all about EFFING Pheasants, we had one have a fit in front of us last year, panicked (Like they do) ending up making a massive dent above our windscreen. Not happy at all, hate the things, they're just bloody stupid 🙄

I feel your pain, its cousin ruined our plans last year on our way to Spain. My advice, especially given you have a German Motorhome would be to contact Zentrale Glass in Germany, they hold most screens in stock. We waited almost 3 weeks and this was being managed by PSV Glass & Glazing and Morelo. PSV were absolutely brilliant and if you go down the U.K. route of replacement they will be the quickest to get things moving. The Manager explained that many insurers farm out windscreen replacement contracts as fixed prices per year, so the replacement company do all they can to keep costs to a minimum. However, most policies allow you to select any replacement company to replace the screen but costs a little more on the excess but well worth it. My advice would be to get in touch with Zentrale direct if going to Germany is an option. If not get in touch with PSV who shall manage it very efficiently. I have PSV managers email address if you need it.
It will be a big bill for sure if it’s coming from Germany. My insurance renewal listed the total claim to replace ours at £11,800. Most was import and shipping costs.

A friend of ours was badly injured when a runaway horse leapt off a banking into the road in front of him.
He hit the side of the horse which then rolled up the bonnet crushing the windscreen and roof.
His car had a sunroof, and luckily as the roof was crushed he popped up through the broken sunroof, but suffered bad injuries in the process and was in a coma for some time. Without the sunroof it was very unlikely that he would have survived.

We had that recently and fortunately it was centrally located below the wipes so repairable, the chap doing it said some companies won't even attempt to repair even though it's possible and just say they need replacing (ie scamming the insurers).

Where's your chip and how big is it?

As per my post below and from experience of helping another Morelo owner (not on the forum) who had been waiting 5 months for a new screen. The screen replacement companies are on fixed annual payment from the insurers based on an average screen price, they do all they can to cut costs. Speak with PSV Glass and I bet they can get you a new screen in a few weeks. You would need to use the option on “non approved repairer” in your insurance screen cover and may cost you a little more, but I guarantee they will get it sorted in a much shorter time.

Probably the same in other parts of the country but parking youre car on the moors above Saddleworth were there are sheep roaming about can result in damage if a ram sees its reflection in the door.

Give motorhomeheroes a call or email and ask them about availability, they have their own sources for glass and will clear it with your insurance company before doing any work if you choose to continue, the screen they provided for mine was made by Pilkington the same as the original, it just didn't have Hymer written on it like the original.

Quite a few years ago driving my work van, which had a ladder rack and ladder on, a pheasant flew up in front of me and and I heard a bang as it hit. 20 miles later when I got out I realised why I'd been getting funny looks - the dead pheasant was wrapped in the ladder.
