Same as Mr D's thermal cooker, this is the Ecopot version that is extremely popular in Australia.

There are 2 capacities: 3.5L (20cm diameter) and 5.0L (30cm diameter), both being around the same height, so we've plumped for the larger one as we like to cook joints etc as well as just single meals so the best of both worlds - note that they've used the 3.5L pictures on the Ebay listing for the 5L.

More info on the below links from another more expensive seller (the last one shows the 5L pictures correctly):

Don't forget to go via TopCashback or Quidco to Ebay in order get 1% back on your purchase too.

Don't tempt me, we carry enough junk as it is. At least the price put me off I'll carry on with our €20 pressure cooker.:giggle:

The latest Mr D's https://mrdscookware.com/how-a-thermal-cooker-works has a cast iron ring on the bottom & uses "vacuum insulation" so a bit different to the Ecopot construction wise but if this one works as well as Mr D's then a good budget option at the discounted prices & like the extra large one. More info. here <Broken link removed> they have a UK distributor so would expect to see a lot of these.

Lot of money for a flask.
It's not a flask, they can be had cheaper but they aren't the quality of this nor do they work anywhere as well.

Wifes just twisted my arm and gone for the 5L one.
Like the fact that you can leave it and go out without leaving something electrical on in the van. Reviews , in the main, seem to be pretty good.
Thank you 👍

The Ecopot is 'solid' in between the inner and outer walls of the pot holder with injected insulation (see below) which keeps the heat in so even if it gets punctured it will still function correctly whereas ones that rely solely on vacuum insulation (ie an air gap) won't.

There is a lady on YouTube who did a comparison of them along with other makes and hay box type products (wonder bag etc) and she noticed that the Mr D one kept bubbling away when she took it off the stove which is down to the cast iron base but of course the downside to this is that it will take longer to heat up on the stove in the first place so IMV not quite so environmentally/energy friendly (and heavier), due to this though it would also keep it hotter for a bit longer (ie up to 10 hours) but the others were still going strong and at a safe eating temperature at 8 hours.

I've done a load of researching on this (as I always do :giggle:) and also from experience know that thermos flasks with air gaps don't keep stuff hot as long compared to ones with insulation or glass inners so the Mr D one needs the iron ring as without it it wouldn't work.

Thought I'd mention what finally convinced hubby to get one, no it's not the lovely stews, curries, meat and veg dinners etc but .... jacket potatoes!!!!

We LOVE jacket potatoes and miss them when we're away in the MH and this does them beautifully .... the below video shows a lady doing them, as she could talk the 'backend off a donkey' I've started it part way in so the first link shows her putting the spuds in etc then the second one is of her taking them out with the spuds being plated at around 4:50mins

I’ve a old Mr Ds which I’m very happy with. I wrote a review here years ago but don’t know how to find it.

Has anyone actually got one and used it? I’d be interested in some reviews. Thanks.

Thought not.......
Flipping heck, you've got the patience of Mr Grumpy!!!! 3.20pm was when you asked and by 5.00 pm you had already got fed up of waiting! :giggle:

Just have a google for reviews for this and similar pots to get the answer ... they DO work but obviously not everyone wants to have to prepared the meal earlier than they would if they were cooking and wanting to eat immediately.

MINXY im waiting with eager anticipation for your first try at jacket spuds, and then i might succumb to buying one, hope you happy with it …pampam

The jacket spuds look like ones done by microwave the inside like a jacket spuds but without a crispy skin.

Crikey, what are you doing up at that time of day? I’ve had 2 hours Kip by then. So I’ll wait til I get your review. Cheers.😀

You can bet as soon as ours arrives hubby will be sticking spuds in it!

One thing to note is that if you wait for our review you'll miss out on the 20% discount which will end at midnight tonight so you'll pay more, best bet is to do some research on Google and look at the various reviews and youtube clips of people using it, or similar ones, to see if it will be of use to you.

If you want to know why we decided to look at Ecopots and other thermal cookers you can blame the Foxes Afloat narrowboat vlogs which we've got into:

Link here to someone cooking a joint of meat and veggies separately using oven bags, keeps the flavours separate and less washing up too, the thing I hate about this video is the fact that she pours the juices from the meat down the sink instead of making gravy!

Hubby finally had a play with the Ecopot today ... he just did a few spuds leaving them for about 2.5 hours, the slightly smaller ones (medium) were cooked, but the larger one was a bit 'underdone' in the centre however after being 'interrogated' by me :giggle: I realised he didn't quite do it correctly!

He put the spuds in, covered with water to just below where the top pan base position was, boiled for 2 minutes then transferred to the outer, placed the top pan in with lid on and closed the outer lid. This meant that there was only about 60% (possibly 50%) of liquid in whereas it should've been 80%, so he should have either left the top pot out and raised the water level in the larger one to the 80% level or boiled some water in the top one and placed it on top so leaving only 20% max 'air' gap in total; it also didn't help that the top pan was cold so immediately reduced the 'encapsulated' heat. Saying that I think if he'd left them another half hour they would all have been perfectly cooked regardless.

Are the like microwave ones I can hear you asking? I can categorically say no, they are much more like oven ones in the sense that the inside is the same texture and 'flavour' you get with proper oven cooked ones and the skins, whilst not crispy, are not soggy either because after you tip the water out you then leave the spuds in the pot with the lid off to 'steam off' for 20 mins which dries them beautifully and they are still piping hot.

Just to mention that if anyone is after a 5 litre one I still have one, I bought the 3.5 and 5 litre ones as hubby wasn't sure which he wanted and decided the 3.5 would be suitable for the things he wants to cook, so if you want the 5 litre at the price I paid + whatever the postage is you can have it, otherwise I'll be sending it back (free return as there wasn't a bag or steamer included which was shown in the photos).
