Hi,
Thinking of getting something to cover the Rio’s driver / passenger seats. Was thinking of getting some sheepskin hides and just tying them on.

Has anyone done this? Any tips and advice?

I’ve heard that natural sheepskins are warm in winter, cool in summer...is this true?
Cheers,
Pusscat

I use a sheepskin from IKEA. Absolutely wonderful whatever the weather!

They work fine for us with the added advantage you can move them about, we often have them on the outdoor chairs. As for tying them on, a cheap pair of heavy duty trouser braces will keep the sheepskins secure.

Think a few Funsters have got skin seat covers from Skyeskins. There may be a Funster discount as well.

We have real skins tied on. Got them from Dunhelm Mill. They have two sizes, single or double. the double one will fit the seat base and back nicely. Wife sewed some ties in and we just tie them on to keep them in place. From memory the double ones were £70 each and the single ones were £35 each.

Thanks for your replies. I'm convinced I need them...!

I've seen some nice natural multi-toned ones. I like the idea of being able to tie them in then take out and use in other places. Could be quite decadent!

I will have a measure up and a think about ties etc.

I called into Skye skyns on Skye 2 years ago and they were making fitted sheepskins for motorhomes, cost around £100 each but they were top quality.
they are not mentioned on the website bu t if you are interested give them a call.
many airline pilots use them.

I broke my back years ago so being comfortable when driving or even relaxing is essential. We have sheepskins on both cab seats and they are super comfy

I have sheepskins on my cab seat, my car seat, my recliners (inside and out) my rocking chair and a couple on the sitting room floor (I do a lot of board games and what have you with the Girlchild, although we have to fight the dog for them!). No fancy ties, I just put them on. Sometimes they need adjusting, but not constant fiddling.

I find them essential for comfort and warmth in the UK, but also for a bit of extra height, as I’m quite short, so I would say try before you buy if you’re tall.

I could go for fitted ones, though. I’ve never thought to look!

.... these days you want to use them to cover seats in your old vans - has the World gone mad? 🙂

...why do you think I want ones I can take out and use ‘elsewhere’?! 😈

Can I ask, are they difficult to clean? We are looking for some suitable seat base covers for the 2 front seats, cause they could end up looking grubby, but they do have to be comfy too. These look interesting.

Of those of you that are using sheepskins on your cab seats, who is using what ? tailored and shorter pile or un-tailored and shaggy full pile ?
Interested in views on both types so I can form an opinion on which to go for.

Another vote for Skyeskyns.
Lovely quality fleeces and nice people to deal with.
Contact them by phone and tell them you are Fun members and get a discount.
We originally bought two cheap skins from a local store but they were very thin and slipped down the seats and rucked up. They are now consigned to the bedroom floor. The Skyeskins ones are so much better.
Our skins are not fixed to the seats, just thrown on and they stay put.

Richard.

Un-tailored and shaggy for us Paul. Didn't you look at them when we met at Mick's in Doncaster a couple of years ago?

Non tailored and shaggy (more comfortable in the summer that way) and I just put the through the washing machine in a wool wash, then comb out with a dog comb. I wouldn’t describe it as easy, but it’s not an absolute pain and they are so worth it.

IKEA do ones that are OK quality, but they don’t compare to really good ones.

Entered my Sunbeam Rapier F/B in a Concours de Elegance, bought 4 White Fleeces just to give it a bit of bling/glam. It worked, got a best in Class. Paid $NZ 25 each

Still got the skins, they are now in the VW T4. They been washed several times, and re-combed, well travelled too NZ-UK-Aus-UK

Oh yeh! forgot to mention, I bought them in 1982:drinks:

Nope, don't remember having a look at your shaggy ones, mind you my memory is pretty bad at the best of times, but being allowed onboard a Hymer, I'm sure would have been indelibly imprinted in my memory. :giggle:
