i'm sure i read a thread not so recently about using flat tinned braid and the radiator mount as an alternative position for an additional earth connection. Ive tried searching to no avail, any ideas.

Use one of the bolts on the gearbox to a suitable bolt on the firewall.
No good connecting to the radiator it's in plastic mounts.

Flat braid earth tends to rot quicker than a regular round copper PVC covered cable.
I've been to many breakdowns were a one handed tug breaks the braided earth's.......never had one round earth break

yes i had a 1980 shoveit (chevette) that wouldn't turn starter. Got starter off , screwdriver and battery you know what to do. The braid rots in the crimp.
The one i seen was not crimped just soldered and parted hole.
