We're off to Spain next Friday, until 20th March
Last week, I received a letter from DVLA advising me that my driving license was due to expire on 9th March. Fortunately, I was able to apply online and they used my existing passport photo. My new license arrived today.
My point is that I never thought to check. I assumed my current license was OK until I become 70. If we had left earlier, I could easily have ended up driving abroad without a license.
So if you're not sure, get your license out and check it.

Evidently they notify you 90 days before your 70 birthday and you can renew online.

I believe the op is referring to the photo expiry date (every 10 years), not the 70th birthday.

After receiving a postal a reminder on Dec 22nd I renewed it online using passport photo and received it on the 27th. Excellent service.
