I'm trying to make a 4 week touring route, during which we'll stop at at least 10 places. At the moment I only know roughly where we'll stop so I want to be able to plot, save and alter a route. I'm looking for software which allows me quickly and easily change the stopping points as I get clearer on exactly where we'll be going.

I've tried a few online route planners and apps but they all require you to type in a town name (which is more of a faff than just clicking on a destination point) and altering one of the steps is a real pain - requiring you to delete the one you want to change, type in/search for the new one and then move it into the correct place in the sequence.

Ideally, it would show the route on a map and I'd be able to add or move a stop by clicking on the map or dragging an existing stop point. I know this functionality is possible as I can do something very similar for planning cycle routes in both Garmin and Strava. I'd use those, but they route for bike rather than car (e.g. avoiding motorways!) so don't really work for this purpose.

Surely there must be a car based app/website somewhere that lets me do this? Any recommendations? (Either Apple, PC or web based)

Thanks

Chris

I'm not sure if it'll help, but Garmin's BaseCamp and Mapsource do what you are looking for.

Pen and paper is a good start, an old fashioned map to follow is good and adds interest for the passenger on a journey.( but doesn’t sound that this is what you are looking for)

Agreed, and do it now and again, however, I think they only support transfer to a Garmin device but could be wrong.

Thanks. Seems I have to buy a map to use Basecamp. I'd rather find a free one if I can.

Google maps -simples.
Nope. That's the obvious solution that I tried first but it has all the problems I described.

You can right click/long click to add points. Drag the destinations up and down the list. Or manually type them in. What's the issue?

I do exactly what you are asking for but it might be ‘my Google’ which I believe is maps but could be Google earth. Cannot track it down for you here as away but worth you looking again.

There is a tutorial video on YouTube for using 'MyGoogle' for 'Plan(ning) your next road trip with Google Maps', it is on a channel called 'She to Me".
