Hymer
Good morning to you all. We have recently bought the above MH it is a 2016 model. We have noticed that the drivers sliding window has condensation in it. Its not always there but it does appear more so than not. My question is can this be fixed or is it a new window ? You cant really see from the close up photo but its in the top left side of that photo. TIA ;)

The first question would be, are you wanting to do this yourself or find somebody to do it? I am not familiar with this exact frame but I am assuming it will come apart at the corners possibly. If you can get the frame out of the van OK and if you can split the frame OK then you should be able to find somebody in the double glazing business who will split the units and remake them with new desiccant glazing bars, if the glass breaks that is another problem but you can have new ones made for not a lot of money but they will need to be 4mm glass not 3mm so they will need 4mm glazing bars not 6mm as the stack thickness has to be 12mm, I used CN glass at Banbury https://www.cnglass.co.uk/ (don't think they will do the frame removal and refit to your van) but you could ask.

If you don't want to DIY it would be a new window or head to Germany to https://www.zentrale-autoglas.de/ they have two premises where they repair this type of window one is close to Bamberg and the other is closer to the channel I believe but you would need to ask where. OK you might find somebody in the UK to do it and you could start with https://www.psvglassandglazing.co.uk/ who used to do them but not sure if they still are.

We have the same problem in our 2015 Hymer B678, except that it effects 3 out of the 4 windows. I also know that another funster Hils and Glenns have the same problem with their Hymer. Strangely both mine and theirs are also the same unusual Sierra Grey colour as your motorhome. I wonder if that is just a coincidence.

I am not confident that I could successfully do this on a DIY basis. Seeing this thread has spurred me to see what I can do about it. Therefore I have contacted the two companies linked in Martin's last paragraph using their Web query forms. I will report back here what their answers are.

This has already happened on two of these windows which Hymer and the dealer replaced them under warranty. I am concerned that if I get them repaired or replaced they may fail again, so I am considering if I should get them all replaced with single glazing.

The other autoglas zentral premises Germany is in Melle, extremely professional, overnight stellplatze for 3 vans with water and EHU.

That psv glass place were a total joke, first they could do it then they stopped all correspondence after the ceo said he would ring in the morning and didn’t. I would love to meet someone who has actually had them replaced there?

Dealer paid for ours at Melle as part of the sale, if you have somewhere inside to store and someone to help you could try to do it yourself.

I don't think van colour has any bearing on it. Those DG units appear to often fail after 4 to 5 years.

Do you know how much it cost them please?
For our Concorde, in 2018, glass replaced both sides so 4 panes of glass was €2500 which dealer paid. They take the windows out and put Perspex in the van, then you can drive off sightseeing etc, come back when you want, stay overnight and they put the windows back in the following day.

Extremely professional and geared up to do it, they also replace windscreens on motorhomes. I can’t praise the service enough, obviously prices may have gone up and all makes maybe differing prices.

There’s no where in this country I have seen totally geared up to do this job like autoglas Melle.

Some people replace with single glazed if they do it themselves I have just met someone with a 2005 Concorde who has done exactly this.

But strange that the only people with Hymers that I know who have had this problem are those with the Sierra Grey Colour. Could be because the colour seems to absorb more heat and the inside of the motorhome gets very warm. Or it could be because the Sierra Grey ones also have grey window frames rather than the usual white ones. Again grey absorbs the heat more than white and therefore more expansion and contraction of the frame?

John's Concorde is white.
More likely those spending a couple of grand on the DG are not adverse to the £2.5k Hymer charge for a pretty colour.

Good point :ROFLMAO: Double glazing came as part of the Alde Arktis Package which included Alde heating. Quoted value of the double glazing element was £800.

Fortunately I didn't pay for either. Dealer overspecced and it stood on the forecourt for a long time. The price I ended up paying meant that I got nearly all the extras FOC. Those were in the good old days when you could actually haggle over the price for new motorhomes. ::bigsmile:

Martin, we have just replace the O/S front unit last Monday, with the spare you left for us in the Flair. Thanks. (y)
I then spoke with Trevor, the MD at CN Glass later in the week.
They now charge £220 to split, clean and re seal, or around £250 for a complete replacement, which is the same price quoted locally to us, for a 4mm x4mm x4mm replacement.
Much much cheaper than going through the Hymer Group, however Hymer22 it may be worth you checking out your windscreen policy, in case all windows/glass is covered. If so, they would order and replace, and you would just pay the excess. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

The colour of the glass will make no difference to the unit failing.
After many years in DG I found DG units failed almost immediately after fitting (v rare) 3years then 7 years then they seamed to last about 15 years, anything over that is a bonus.
You may get a DG firm to make you the units or split, clean and reseal. If new They would need your units as a pattern. Then it would need 4 to 5 days for the toughened glass to come back then you would hope they would seal the glass into a unit within a day.
JockandRita any thoughts 😉😃
Edit You posted while I was typing 😀

I doubt that insurance would pay out because it's a failed unit not broken 😉

Absolutely Terry, but I didn't want to suggest anything which might be considered inappropriate, or unethical behaviour. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Jock

Do you know if CN would also take the glass out and replace it for me. I suspect that any attempt I make would lead to a heap of broken glass on the floor, or worse.

I doubt if they would know how to remove the glass from your van. Then you would need to store your van for a week with no glass in while they made the unit's.

Peter another idea 😀you could take the units out, make a 3mm ply pattern then refit originals back in place and wait for new one's to be made

More like too much years rather than money. :(

Used to be able to turn my hand to anything, but not any more. Many years ago I DIY built a large extension onto our then house and the only things I didn't do was driving the excavator, laying the hot bitumen flat roof and the plastering. Those days are long gone. Been spending some time lately fettling the motorhome but it takes ages now to do it.

Great stuff Peter, so if I get the blown unit that just came out over to you, can you take that with you as a template, and get me 2 x new ones made up whilst you are having yours done please? There's a good chap. (y) ............................................

Cheers,

Jock. ;)

Sorry, just seen your question Peter, however, my reply to you would be very much what Terry has already advised.

Good luck getting sorted. (y)

Jock. :)

Is that the lay flat one that I flogged you at one of Dave and Polly's Bring and Buy meets at Holbeach a few years ago?? Too slow for an N&B's tank? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
You maybe thought it was a lay flat hose Peter, but no, it's a proper one with a decent bore and pressure. It even comes on it's own reel with Hozelok type connections and a winding handle. Top quality it is too.

We asked insurance and was told its not covered as its wear and tear. Thanks for all the help on this thread. We are still dealing with this for now by covering the window with the silver screen when we park up. It seems to keep it pretty clear. It looks like the only solution for us is a trip to Germany.

CazPaul do you know where the person who replaced the double glazing with single had it done?
