Hi, hope someone can help. Am in France in LA Rochelle and our tall fridge freezer has stopped working. We have been travelling for over 2 months and during that time the fridge had been giving off an odour which we assumed was a dead mouse. The fridge itself was working OK but yesterday, while on gas I noticed it was not clicking as it does from time to time and the burner was on and working but the fridge for sure is not. We had to purchased ice today so now it's a large cool box. Any advise would be appreciated. Hoping we do not have to purchase a new one.

Sounds like the gas has escaped and you will need a professional repair or new fridge.... the gas is what smells...

Sorry to put a downer on it but it will be expensive....

But welcome to the forum...

Was the smell like ammonia?

Is there still ice on the freezer fins?

If it is a leak and it's been smelling for 2 months it's a slow leak, so I would expect the freezer to still be cold until it all escapes.

Still not good but it helps diagnose the problem.

Same as we had last August, we were told there options to mend and regas but given the age we opted for a brand new fridge

That is where the fun will really start, if yours is part of a tech tower, amazingly although still fitted in new MH’s quite recently they are obsolete you can not detach the oven from the fridge you are stuck

In the end we abandoned our oven and bought an extra tall fridge with lower drawer which is same height as tec tower, but cost us £1500 as a returned unit plus fitting

There is nothing you can do to save yours , just go and buy a cool box and make the best of the rest of your trip o_O

Thank you all for responding. The freezer has now totally defrosted, we had actually turned it off as the gas burner was very hot and doing nothing. The fridge also lost all temperature and when I think about it, it's been on off like that for a while. As you can see from photo it's a tall black front fridge/freezer and just 10 years old. Any recommendations for agents in LA Rochelle in France would be appreciated.

It is not fixable sorry, the only good things it doesn't look like a tech tower, so your oven is already a separate unit

You will still need close to £2000 to replace like for like :(

We have just been to a dealer and he is telling us we need a new one therefore we prefer to be in England so can you give us a recommendation because actually we live in Southern Spain and have done for last 18 years.

Maybe you could have new gubbins for it. Look at these compressor kits:

Have you cleaned the flue ? A common cause of fridge failure when on gas with the symptoms of no longer cooling yet the burner still operating. When was the last time your flue was cleaned.

Are you anywhere near Cadiz? We had our fridge fixed very efficiently by a dometic agent in Puerto della Santa Maria. He also fitted new one in a van on our campsite.

Wish we were in spain, we are in France unfortunately.

Is there any way you can confirm this diagnosis? Have you tried it on mains electricity? That will tell you if it's just a gas problem, or it really is the refrigerant circulation that's failed.
