Can one use standard toilet products, or do they have to be of a special nature? Also interested in eco options! Smelly thanks (=;

Yay, it's a toilet thread :)

The "blue" chemicals are increasingly frowned upon. Undoubtedly they work, although some don't appreciate the chemical fragrance. But they can be problematic as the chemical prevents some eco systems in septic tank systems working as found on many smaller campsites. The "green" versions are better.

Many are quite happy using some of the bio clothes washing detergents. Make sure this is the bio type, not the non bio. The enzymes in the bio will start to break down your toilet waste and meanwhile you get the "nice" fragrance of the detergent. The Lidl or Aldi detergent sachets are favoured for cost, but some use liquid detergents. I find these work well, add a sachet to the cassette when you start using it, and a couple of days when you empty, a nice liquid slurry that can foam slightly when you tip it at the elsan point.

Some use no chemicals or additives. But they have a device called a SOG. Essentially that is a fan driven vent drawing fresh air over the cassette's innards, venting back through a filter to the outside. It is supposed to naturally start some of the sewage process. Users claim they get no smells, but neighbours downwind of the MH might not be so happy.

No not at all you only need a capful at a time😊

Sachets have similar quantity, bit expensive but more convenient as I just slip one in my pocket on way to disposal point and drop it in before putting the cap back on.

The word 'Bio' appears prominently on UK washing machine products, but not on the Continent where you need to look for the word 'Enzyme' in the list of contents - take your glasses, but most of them have it.

We use Fairy Liquid :ROFLMAO:

Seriously !!! When I empty the cassette, rinse out with water, pour out leaving a little (half a cupful ?) of clean water in cassette. Back to MH. Literally a drop of Fairy Liquid into cassette, shake around and refit.

Use Fairy Liquid for washing up and handwashing clothes as well so less stuff to carry about.

Never have a smell from cassette and use diluted zoflora spray in the toilet bowl.

But of course being from Cumbria, our No.2s don't smell anyhow:pinocchio:

Not sure what you mean by "standard toilet products". You should not use anything designed for your toilets in your house, they are much too harsh. Could use chemicals specifically designed for chemical toilets, but not the blue stuff as that is not environmentally friendly. Or, much better and cheaper is to use Bio cloths washing pods, liquids or powders. Most of us use the ones sold by Aldi or Lidl, but other ones are available if you shop in Waitrose.

I'll give that a try when my blue chemical stuff is finished.
If you have been using blue, you will need to very very thoroughly clean the cassette before switching to the bio type liquids. Any trace of the blue will stop the enzymes working (which is why blue is so horrid for the environment).

Formil tabs from lidle or Aldi are the preferred capsules ... just pop one in...

I use these blocks

Almat-Colour-Washing-Tablets__small.png

They come conveniently packed in twos so I put two in each time, with another two added halfway through in very hot weather. Added advantage they keep the inside of the cassette clean.
It is vital that all traces of previous chemicals are flushed out first, but then don't over rinse each time it's emptied, the idea is to keep some enzymes in to kickstart the process next time.

I've also found that leaving the cassette a day or two when we get home means the contents are very liquid and much easier to deal with. Obviously that won't work when touring unless you have a second cassette. When touring I empty when there is a proper facility even if the cassette isn't full as one never knows where the next facility will be but on site where there are facilities it's done when needed and just before we leave the site.

What is it with the blue stuff that’s so bad? I thought it was formaldehyde but most blue doesn’t have that in it nowadays.

That is a good question.
Is all blue bad?
We assumed it was & have one unopened 2LT container & one used once of the same size of Blue loo stuff.
Then we switched to bio tablets.
The switch is working well but :( I've got blue stuff to use
HO - next task is to read the label ;)
BRB

Edit: OK no go on our blue:

I'll give that a try when my blue chemical stuff is finished.

You must clean out all chemicals from the cassette thoroughly or it wont work. The chemicals will simply kill the delicate Bio Bugs.
It might take a couple of smelly attempts before its clean and starts to work

I have found a toilet fluid that does its job and smells good too.

It is Camperlife, Toilet Blue, available in different fragrancies, I quite like the Old Spice one.

If you do change to use bio liquid, you must clean thoroughly the cassette because any trace of the blue stuff will kill the bio liquid. This would leave your loo rather smelly until all traces have gone. It is undoubtedly worth the effort for once established the smell and price make it worthwhile.
