I am keen just to check the oil levels for the engine and auto gearbox on the Fiat Ducato 150 (2016).

I know the vehicle should be level to check the engine oil, but should the engine be hot or cold, running or not?

And the same for the auto box. Does it even have a dipstick??

TIA

Usually the level is checked when hot and after a few minutes to allow oil to return to the sump.

Not sure about the gearbox. Do you have a manual? If not you perhaps need to get one.

If it’s a Comformatic then it’s not really an auto box but a robotised manual.

Should be checked with engine off best left to settle for few minutes if its been running.
Comfomatic box no dipstick filled for life.

If its like mine leave to stand for a while then dip and wipe several times as the oil tends to rise up the tube and give a false reading,

There are two ways to check a dipstick that I know of. Hmm! 3 if both are combined.
High and low, hot & cold, or high & low with a 3rd middle notch for the low if oil hot.

Your OM will say which marking your dipstick has but keeping the oil level between the marks is all to do - awareness of how hot the oil is helps too.

I found my 56 plate Boxer dipstick scary at first.
Pulled out the 1st time it’s usually dry 😳
But refitted and then removed it gives a level reading. Weird.
When tuning on the Boxer there is a rough estimate of oil level given in the instrument cluster display but I prefer checking with a dipstick. (y)

Edit: missed an autocorrect misstake 🤪

Had a weird thing the other day, noticed the wife was using her strimmer, which means she will soon be wanting her mower. So got it out and dipped the oil, nothing?? Odd, checked a few more times and still nothing. Mower always stored level and usually spot on for oil. Any way rather than just adding oil I decided to drain sump and refill. Out came exactly 600ml, which is the sump capacity. How weird is that?

Alway do mine before starting in the morning. That what the manuals used to say 40 years ago. Never read a manual since. Because I am a man 😂😂😂😂
I find when you go round roundabouts and it goes ding, ding, ding & flashes up Low oil warning is a good guide to it needing topping up.

Firstly im astounded youve reached the ripe old age of motorhome ownership and never checked your oil before 😱.

But ideally the best time to check oil level is first thing in the morning before the engine has been started. Thats when you will get the best reading as the oil will have fully drained back to the sump.

It should sit half way or slightly above the marked area on the dipstick.

Ding, ding, seems a bit lame.
When you do that with a Fiat it goes knock, knock, knock.!!!

Then silence? :Eeek: :Eeek:

I've read a book recently about the French resistance.
The car factory's working for the Germans would fit extra long dip sticks so the engine's would fall pretty quickly.
They would also leave out the odd ball out of the ball bearings

Currently running with a Mercedes V6, no Dipstick having to check via onboard computer which is weard.

Volvo cars have done away with dipsticks and use an electronic one which is convoluted to use but works fine as long as its software doesn't fail! Give me a Mk1 eyeball and a dipstick every time; never fails never lies! (y)

You are not wrong there. She needs an electric start machine as her shoulder is bug......d. I make do with all the old stuff. My field tractor is a 1965 International.
I still have to maintain hers as well as mine.
