Diesel filler cap difficult to turn (1 Viewer)

Good evening !

I noticed after filling up that the filler cap was difficult to turn with the key. It's a 2018 model so I'm a bit surprised. Anyone else with the same experience/solution.

Do you mean the key is difficult to turn? Or the cap is difficult to turn with the key? As you should not turn the cap with key it has a grip on it to turn it.
Ours has always been a bit fiddly but I’ve got used to it now after two years.

Ours 2018 played up at first, as it didnt always seal properly. Further investigation showed that it needed to be placed evenly flat on all sides before locking, otherwise it would only be gripping on one side allowing spillage when brimming the tank. (much more difficult than any car I have owned)
I applied some silicon spray to the rubber and the lock, no probs since, however I hope I can remember how to do it again as its been so long since we filled her up.

Yes the cap is difficult to turn with the key, its a new problem that;s just surfaced. Maybe I'll try some silicone spray. Is there a brand I should be looking for as I'm shopping here in |Spain. Thanks

Going with most above. Avoid WD40 and go with silicon spray. Big can from Screwfix for just a few £'s.
I bought some graphite power for my key locks, just got to find it now.

You should always carry silicone spray anyway, it’s got many uses, sliding mosquito nets for instance. Never leave home without it.

Plus one for silicone spray. Also absolutely excellent for your electric windows, wind the window down, spray the rubber slots the glass slides up and down in, heypresto! nice slidey up and down windows again! I do this as a matter of course on all my vehicles, especially the ones without electrics, every six months or so. Make sure you shake the tin vigorously first though or all you'll spray on will be the propellant in the can!!

It strips any grease off your workings and then after a few weeks it dries and needs spraying again ,plus it attacks rubber

Great for some jobs but you need to know its limitations. It attracts grit dust it drys out fairly quickly leaving the grit behind.
Also need tbe very weary on plastics a complete no, no, on nylon it makes it swell. Many a Motorhome door higes have been bu**ered by spraying nylon sleeved ones with WD40.

I agree with the comments about WD40. It is fine for freeing a nut temporarily but not for putting in a confined space where it is left, and dries sticky.

Graphite powder, or grease, is what professional locksmiths use.

Silicon spray if no graphite available, but graphite can be obtained from scraping a sharpened pencil 'lead', softer the better.

Please do not use the key to turn the cap. What will you do if the pressure of doing that snaps the key, part in your hand and part stuck in the lock!

On my transit the key unlocks cap by turning 90º anti clockwise then you have to continue turning with the key to unlock & remove cap.There is/was no facility to turn cap using hand as it had no outside grip & is in a recess. Fortunately it wasn't a lot of cop when I bought it & a struggle to remove the first 2 times so when it refused to undo the 3rd time on way to the UK I smashed the lot off, fortunately with nothing going inside. The ridiculous amount they wanted for new cap meant I just left the temporary cap on & fitted a lock to the cover.

Just to check that I'm right on this, there is nothing to get your hands on to turn the cap. The key must be turned. It's what I've always done. Its an X290. Can anyone confirm this please ?

e z mistake.
I was reading that the key was being turned to get the fuel cap off & was surprised.
Seems legit for this fuel filler type tho
