Newbie, tent graduate.
Good morning

Newbie advice please.

I've found my perfect first van, right layout, right price and the MOT history looks ok. The only problem is that it's in Paington and I'm in Aldershot.
I've been looking locally (Jim's book under my arm) but as a newbie with zero mechanical knowledge I intend to get a pre purchase check anyway.

Can any of you West Country funsters recommend someone to give it the once over?
Has anybody had any dealings with SD Trading, Paignton?

I will try to post the ad
Many thanks
Ceri

I am afraid I can't help you. I have idea that this company may be part of Alan Kerr MH dealers in Paignton and they use them to clear some vans.

Not sure how you do it but it may be worth trying to con tact the last owner, as the reg number is clear G112 GCW

Thanks Colyboy,

I've checked the MOT history but I wouldn't know how to find the last keeper. Can I do that online?
Cheers

No
And Im not sure you can get previous keeper info any longer because of Data Protection
Previous owner no longer appears on V5 documents issued in the last 4 or 5 months

Thats a great site, thanks Big Map.

I think I've done as much as I can from here, I need someone to go look at it for me. I'll try the AA, RAC and google devon motorhome 'doctors' and get somebody look for me if no funsters know of anyone.
I know the layout is good for me and its even RHD, anything more technical or mechanical is above me.
I'm quite happy tackling any internal issues and I've got a couple of useful sons. But alas none of them are mechanics.

I never expected spending money to be so nerve wracking, I'm usually A* at that!

Thanks Poacher,
I've emailed him and its all systems go.

Now lets see how the dealer feels about a doctor!

Doctor and Dealer meet tomorrow morning.

Robert Gale is going for a look, and he's reassured me that ST Trading have a good reputation.
I feel like I'm 3 wheels of the way to being a fully mobile funster.
You may regret your warm welcome...

Bob Gale does our hab check every year and we have nothing bad to say about him. He's very experienced so would probably be able to do as good a job as anybody.

Thanks Tincas,

He's there at the moment. Ive got everything crossed.
:D

Disaster averted!
Chassis is good, on board systems ace... however, everything in between needed replacing.
Rob Gale saved me a fortune. "Complete rebuild" was his advice.
I paid his balance with gratitude and turned my back: I've only got this money to spend once.
Back to the market I go (n)

Sorry to hear that but at least you know.

Money well spent really, like you say you can only spend the money once. Good luck next time.

I hope the right van turns up for you soon.

Sorry to hear that but there is at least one positive that you (and anyone else living in the area) can take from this and that is that Bob Gale Caravan Services is a man you can trust to give impartial professional advice. Bob has performed the annual hab check on our camper for the last 5 years and we cannot fault him. Not only that but his charges (around £70.00) are way less than main dealers Martins of Exeter (who want in excess of £200) and the whole thing is done in ones driveway.

Deep dale,
I actually purchased the Hymer and drove her home to Edinburgh.
It’s a great camper, can’t believe what I got for my £4K
It has a small oil leek which was fixed last week along with new matress and a new panel in rear which was damp.
Absolutely over the moon with purchase. Runs well and only cost £100 on diesel to get her home.
Off to Spain with her in a few weeks
Did you find another van?

Oh, congratulations Colin's Camper
I presume Rob Gayle was being over cautious. That's an adventurous first trip too!

I'm happy to say I did get a van. And I broke all my rules, danced over all the red lines, and bought a 30yr old Tabbert FFB.
I went to see her, fell head over heels, and shook hands within an hour. I didn't even get my polarity plug out!
She had a charger issue (Calira unit knackered), so my son is battling her back to full operational status.
She's the first vehicle I've been emotional about.
I hope your van is giving you as much pleasure as our lovely Lucy is giving me and the grandlings.
Drive safe
