My new Sunlight PVC should arrive at the dealer this week but when we spoke last week he warned of delays (possibly weeks) in V5s being issued. And without the vehicle being registered I don't believe I can drive it away.

I've Googled the subject and found that DVLA have issues due to COVID 19 but I think that relates to paper applications from Joe Public, and I've not seen anything about new registrations by the Trade

I plan to make a call to the dealer tomorrow for an update and to ask him to be more specific but I'm interested in any recent experience of Funsters.

Has anybody bought a brand new vehicle requiring registration at DVLA in recent times and, if so, how long did it take?

I bought a new van in March this year. lucky me one night away and then lockdown! I applied to have it upgraded for PHGV straight away, still waiting, SORNed it and can't tax it as stuck in system and no one will answer at DVLA! Kept record of all correspondence and planning on going away in Sept ( June was cancelled!) If I get pulled summons for no road tax its not through want of trying!

My new one took 7 weeks to get "seen" by the DLVA website so I was allowed to drive it, still no V5 after 3 months. Chased them last week and they are sending a "duplicate".

Let me check my (mis) understanding. You couldn't drive your vehicle for 7 weeks?

If it's not in the system it also makes me wonder how insurers respond to applications for cover...

Thats right! Sat on my driveway as dealer delivered it to me.....

As I knew the number plate, my insurers were okay (Caravan Guard).

Delivered to my drive, now there's a thought 🤔.
At least it wouldn't be stuck in a compound if/when lockdown returns.

To be fair, it gave me plenty of time to do a few of the mods before using. Most frustrating part was that the insurers wanted an alarm installed within 30 days, but I couldn't take it to Vanbitz for doing! Again, they were good about it and extended the 30 days. They called when I was on my way back from Vanbitz to check....

New van purchased from dealer on 25.07.2020. Was registered and taxed yesterday by dealer. Pick up next Tuesday. Looks as if dealer registrations are being done.

Reassuring news, thank you. Again may I check something, is your vehicle a first registration or did the dealer register a change of ownership at DVLA?

It was a first registration. Good luck with your registration. Hope it all works out for you.

What a way to run a railway, or a government agency. I feel for you and certainly wouldnt blame you for driving the thing, RFL or not. If it comes to a prosecution I don't think there's a jury or ombudsman in the land that would find against you.

If things do turn nasty, you can say I told you to do it.

Bought in Feb. V5 came relatively quickly. Uprated revenue weight in April and sent V5 in for amendment. Still waiting for it to be returned.

You can tax at the post office. Just walk up and say what taxation class you want. I had to do this as my taxation class was "police", so no luck online! I just said I wanted Private HGV and they let me pay the tax for that. Better caught with a taxation class you can defend in court than a SORN in any case.

Same here. On most short trips to decent sites we can get away with under 3500kg as we don't take the bikes and can go without filling the tanks. If it is not back before our next planned big trip, I will be considering it to the new weight and fighting it out with whoever takes issue with it.
I appreciate the CV-19 situation and am not too bothered. Just making the statement that I hope the DVLA and police adopt a similar understanding.
Safe travels all 👍

An update after speaking with my dealer. Apparently DVLA are taking between two to three weeks to process new registrations, although he did say he also has to jump hurdles with the Customs and the VAT.

I asked about online registration, but seemingly only the bigger players, Southdown and the like, have the volumes to qualify for online.

He went on to mention he has 15 vehicles in his compound that he has paid suppliers for but can't yet turn back into cash. Who'd want to be a small business?? Not me.

As to when I'll collect my keys, well, my gran would say, "many a slip twixt cup and lip" and I'm bracing myself for further delays.

I bought a new motor home mid July with a collection date for the 4th August i was given the reg number and insured it for that date. I picked the van up and drove it home a week later we went to Brecon for a few days to try the van out . On the way home i was pulled by the police they informed me that there APNR camera could not find the vehicles details as i was only half a mile from home and i was able show them my invoice from the dealer and my insurance certificate they allowed me to drive to my home and not to use the van until i had a V 5

My registration number came through today, exactly three weeks since application. (y)

Sounds like it is back to the normal 2 to 3 weeks. It took 3 weeks a year back (well before Covid) when my motorhome was first registered.

I had a V5 that needed to be changed to 'historic' at the Post Office

Received it today - took 2 weeks

Another good job by the DVLA

Isn't it strange how the private companies are managing to look after their customers better than many of the the public bodies. Does Cv19 affect public servants differently?
