Just joined this club, been camping for years as a youngster but now retired have decided to enjoy the comforts of a M/H. Hope to explore France next year, first trip camping abroad in our M/H so any advice would be greatly received. Thank you.

Hello and welcome. If you have specific queries about going to France we can answer them, otherwise are you looking for general information?

Wyn

Any information of how to plan our trip, where to stay etc etc would be most helpful Wyn. Thanks

Any information of how to plan our trip

Book crossing ( just to lower price ) then GO. Make the rest up as you go along. That's what motorhoming is all about.

Take "All The Aires France" and ACSI discount book.

Good information thank you Hilldweller

It's a lot simpler than you might expect once out of the UK. We always book our ferry one way. We do not book any campsites but use aires almost entirely. Aires are a facility that the UK does not really provide. They are for motohomes only (do not confuse with motorway aires) Here you can fill, empty and usually stay for a night or a couple of nights. We do not really have a schedule but rather a vague route to persue (which we tend not to stick to) This means we can decide where we go at will.
When we feel like it we can make our way northwards and book our return trip for the next day or day after. Again no rush to get to ferry port or worry about how far to go before turning back.

You may want to consider the fact that Calor Gas is not available outside UK and each countries suppliers are different. More info about that if you need it.

Water connections and electricity connections are USUALLY the same as here.

More to follow....

Excellent information Wyn thank you. We thought of going mid May would you agree on that time of year? Assuming the weather across the channel will be better than here!! I hope lol.

Hmmm... I think one thing that really is difficult to predict is going to be the weather! We were driving from Boulogne to somewhere during the summer and the gusty wind blew our skylight off! (No, it wasn't open) Then a few days later it was sweltering. You would expect it to better than here but can't guarantee it. Obviously the further south you go the better you can expect it to be.

If you are looking for recomendations of attractions to visit over there try 'Puy Du Fou' near Cholet. It has it's own aire (huge) and I would recommend one day not being long enough so allow 2 and try to take in 'cinescine' as well. Book online for discounts even while on the aire.

'Les Machines' at Nantes.

You can Google both of those.

Enjoy visiting the local markets whenever they are on and try the produce.

Do be aware of low bridges at places like Rouen, they can catch you out if you don't have a satnav that allows you to enter your size (ie your vehicles size!) - check out threads on here about Chinese Satnavs.

In France the shops in most places close on a Sunday and sometimes only re-open Monday afternoon!

Fuel is best bought from supermarkets, so is your gas but you'll need to arrange either French gas bottles or adaptors.

Driving on the right is no problem but have your passenger prepared to look left at awkward junctions as there will be a blind spot to the left.

These are all just random ideas that come to mind, keep asking about any specifics.

Welcome Wolfie, we are only up the road at Maidstone. I worked on the ferries out of Dover for 10 years. P and O.

As a resource it is well worth paying the 15 quid to join.

Cheers, David.
