I'm a newbie (ISH) 2022( type 2 VW's and caravans 1980 s to 2022)s
Has anyone been told damp checks are only being carried out on the floor at the habitation service nowhere else .?

Thanks for your reply .I have questioned them a few times as it sounds odd not to do so . All our caravans have had full damp check . This is a 2021 vehicle damp check done up to now....damp found twice once in garage area sorted this year and once before we bought it at the front area also sorted. It was n12 mths old when we bought it

No that's wrong. You need damp check at the roof level also. Around the roof vents around all lockers around the hab door and around the windows. Along the lower wall levels just above the floor and along the top of the walls under the ceiling.
Don't let them put you off by just the floor checks as that's incorrect.

I looked at a motorhome the beginning of this year with/for my sister at a small independent dealer who stated the hab check they have done doesn't include any damp check what so ever.
When I asked why he replied that a damp check is a worthless waste of time.
This was on a 30 grand van.

The industry needs to be more professional about damp checks and warranty.
Just had some work done because a slight damp issue. Check done each year and is within the manufacturer’s 6 year warranty period. Happy to have checked each year as reassurance but it was indicated that the work possibly cannot be done on warranty as it wasn’t done by a main dealer I bought it from. Who actually don’t sell this brand any more and will not service them. I was also told that there was an potential issue as I hadn’t had the under floor spray done - when I bought it new i was told it wasn’t required as it has a fibreglass under seal. Seems like too much of a cottage industry still, it should not be - these are expensive vehicles and it’s important they are maintained. Manufacturers/dealers should not shy away from their responsibilities. End of sermon!

Warranties in motorhomes are worthless.

If you'd bought a fridge and it broke, the manufacturer would have gone bust by now with their endless loopholes and excuses.

Best get handy at fixing things, or find a man who can, that's my plan.

Actually with respect I disagree. Oven, fridges, car, bike all have had warranty issues sorted. Okay not a simple a process as it should be. With a motorhome you could be in for say rebuilding the rear end for, I don't know, £10k? Not sure I want a man who can to sort that out.

When we bought our motorhome (on a Fiat Ducato base) the vehicle battery failed 30 months in.

We bought it from Dolphin Motorhomes who have their own spec for Swift, and included an extra year warranty, so our local Fiat/Ford dealer (who have a terrible rep) begrudgingly replaced it after a lot of faff. However, they refused to provide any kind of paperwork to prove that they had done so, so I had to keep my own record.

I later discovered that when they replaced the access plate in the passenger footwell they had pinched the cables!

More recently, they charged me £900+ for replacing an injector in my Ford Focus. When a second one failed 3 months later, my nearby Motorhome servicer replaced it for £330 and apologised for the cost 😤

Not really. I had a major damp repair done under warranty. Also had a fridge replaced. Various other more minor nigglesl this was within the first 2 years of a brand new van.

Chainwheel2 does Benimar have any specific requirements for their damp warranty? How long is their damp warranty for?

My experience is with my Burstner purchased from new in 2021. Habitation warranty is very separate from the damp warranty. Habitation warranty is only 2 years. Damp is 10 years but requires a detailed damp report and 30 - 40 readings taken from all over the van. The only area not checked is the floor due to the construction of it. The report must be done by a Burstner dealer annually (at customers cost) and recorded on the Burstner database.

Habitation 2 years water ingress 5 years. But it says we have to have yearly checks or it's not valid. We are going to write to Benimar , and copy to Marquis , asking Benimar how we follow the warranty instructions when their authorised dealer only checks the floor!!!
Does it mean that damp can only appear on the floor? Perhaps gravity is expected to reverse so it rains upwards😡?

I’m surprised you bought a 12 month old van that previously had damp issues.

We were unaware of the front damp until l was looking at paper work after we had got it home .. but it had been sorted by previous owner not been a problem since.

Having twice sold a motorhome to a dealer, by far the most important thing they were interested in were the damp readings (all round the van).
If I had to get the annual hab check with the dealer I bought the van from, and I was worried about them, I would first get a damp check from an authorised workshop somewhere else.

Good idea to leave a damp detector in van. We are not worried that we have a damp van it is just we always felt the damp check was important. Anyway communication sent to Benimar 🤞

Hi,
I have just had my 1st Hab check carried out £456
With the paperwork there is a plan showing 80 damp check readings...
I think expensive but needed to keep the guarantee.

I honestly don’t believe hab tests are worth paying for. It’s money for old rope. When I was younger slept in a car when went to cornwall and in van,
did I check for damp …. no!!

It’s like insurance you can if wanted insure everything in your life and use most of your income to do this, for something that may never happen. Why do you think there are insurance companies …. because they know the risks in general are low and they may huge profits by us worrying about something that may not happen.

I can understand why you would have one done with a van from new to protect your warranty, as the small print will have a clause that any faults will not be covered if a hab test has not been done. in fact we did during the warranty period. Our Hymer is now 8 year old and have not had any hab test done for over 5 years, so saved up to £2500. Not seen or noticed any damp, so why worry. If you were selling to a dealer the chances are they would find something to lower the value wether you had hab test history or not.

I may be corrected by others who know better - but I have mostly read that a ‘good’ damp detector is very expensive
The type of damp meter the professional habitacion checkers use cost around £300+ and they should check all aroundthe van, i.e. around every roof vent, Windows doors including lockers etc. Also all around the roof and Luton and garage area...
Just sayin....

I bet the cost of the habitation check has not gone down

Trouble with water ingress you can't always detect it by eye, I always have it checked if it's out of a water ingress warranty I check it with a device myself, what also concerns me that a lot now are plastic type frames and from my experience it also deteriorates over time, how do you know the condition, I suspect the manufacturers don't know the either!
