Going to D-Day Beaches 8th July as anyone just been, there now or going soon.
Just asking are the museums and monuments open.
Thank you.

Rds559 if you go. Can you post an update 👍. My grandson is keen to go and I may take him over the end of July so any tips, info would be appreciated. Been over 10 years since the wife and me visited so all my info could be out of date.

I have had it in mind to go for some years now. My wife was born the week before the landings. And she too is curious to see what remains and to visit the area. So any info would be of interest to. (y)

If you do go in the motorhome watch out on some of the car parks as bloody great rocks appear from nowhere and reverse into your van, or so a *friend* of mine alleges...........( she is in the other room!)

Absolutely brilliant experience, the history aspect is so well organised.
We took the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, first stop Pegasus Bridge, then followed the "Overlord" signed route all the way to St Maire Egliase, visiting all the museums, beaches, monuments and the cemeteries along the way.
Also we actually found the war grave of one of my Mother's brothers in the cemetery at Bayeaux.
No problems with aires / campsites / overnight stops.
Would recommend the trip, well worth the experience

We went to a D Day Momorial tour years ago, very moving, if you are at all sensitive tears may flow, especially if you do some War Graves there is also now a museum on the coast near Arowmaches ( spelling may not be right).

There's a basic but handy municipal site at Arromanche, easy walk to the coast and museum. We had a nice petit dejourner in one of the cafes there.

We’ve visited several WW2 German V bomber museums so far in France recently since we’ve had the Moho just to try and get an understanding of what it was like.
I’ve been watching the IKS channel on YouTube very interesting they visit all sorts of war period locations at home and abroad.

When we did the trip about 10 years ago, we made Pegasus bridge our first stop. When you visit the museum there you can pick up a map for all the beaches, museums, etc.. very useful. You could also invest in a pass that gave a discount in some of the other museums and exhibits. We found overnight stops easy and this was before the days of me having a smart phone and apps 👍. Looking forward to another trip, especially with my 15 year old grandson..

I recommend Major & Mrs Holt’s D Day pocket guide to buy and take with you.
You may be able to get it on eBay

My father went over via Juno which was the Canadian beach. The Canadians have set up their own museum which gives a short tour of two defence pill boxes showing their development over the war. The museum was set up after the 50th anniversary by Canadian donations. The guides are all young Canadians who come over for a year to work (after you spend some time thinking the guides were French but taught to speak American). Interesting how the terrain has changed and the Canadian perspective although we did not have enough time but will go back.

We'll be there in 3-4 days time so I'll report back what's open. I suspect that everything will be open with Covid restrictions - alcohol hand gel, masks & SD.

Have been many times on the bike always on the nearest weekend to the actual landings. Many events taking place, plenty of people in period costumes and uniforms and military vehicles zooming around. We normally go to St Maire Eglise where a big commemoration takes place. We stay in a chateau just south of Cherbourg and on the 65th anniversary we had an elderly gentleman staying with us who was one of the pilots on the landing craft. He had some amazing anecdotes to tell us. Also visited the small cemetary at Abbeville where my grandfather is buried.

Twice we have tried to visit but were rained out, and I mean really rained. We got to the Canadian museum, even found a parking spot (there is or was a small aires near the entrance), it was horrendous weather, we'd have been drowned getting into the museum, so we decided to go back later when the weather improved. It didn't. So we'll go back another time. We are booked for the tunnel July 17, so if it's not raining, maybe this time!

Loads to see normally but check if the museum's are open yet. They are not in Germany. There are some very interesting out door sites and town's to visit.
