I’m used to using ferries in scotland where you can turn up without booking, buy a ticket and wait in the unbooked lane. If there is space you get on. Is it possible to do the same at any cross channel ferries?

At peak times you may have to wait until they have a slot. As above, you'll pay what we used to call brochure price, full rate.

Same with trains

Advance pre-booked train tickets are far cheaper also if you break up the journey but stay on the SAME train for the whole journey it can be far cheaper also.
eg, Chester to ELY buy 1 ticket or break up the journey Chester, Nuneaton, Ely { Same journey, same train }

Ah! I see. Never thought about the costs. CalMac ferry journeys are one price no mater what time of day or year. Thanks

CalMac are heavily subsidised by the taxpayer, that's why they are so cheap though others may disagree.
