I went onto Brittany ferries site today to price up a ferry to Bilbao in September, wow more than double what it was before CV19. Think they are trying to make up what they have lost over the last few months. 😡😡
Cheapest is £724, so it’s a drive through France for me then.

And a drive through France for me too, I'm sure now if those prices remain the New Norm for travel to Spain, many should join the French motorways and save a bob or plenty.....or just make the drive a pleasant one.....thanks for posting.....

We always do Dover to Calais and then make France part of our holiday. We don’t generally use tolls, other than the odd one when it makes sense.

I've just booked Portsmouth-Caen return for next month for £526. Off down to Mojacar for a couple of weeks.

Been in Mojaca since November should of left in March. Think our route back will be St Malo Portsmouth.

Where is good for parking up or local sites to stop ? Never been there before.

It's a case of what you want there's a nice site up by the old town or a rundown looking one on the front in a great position. Can check both out if you want. Wildcamping harder this year as lots of no parking 8pm-8am gone up but still possible. Local repsol garage has black dump and water and another with LPG
PM me if more Info needed

Ouch!
Even at £850 return I still save over £400 driving through France.
I had always drove through France but to extend our stay in autumn we have got the ferry home the last couple of trips.

£280 o/w St Malo Portsmouth 10.00-18.00 400ml difference to Santander from where we are. So far that's the way back.

I can get a 6m van with bike rack and outside 2/4 berth cabin, which is £130 for £320, on the Pont Aven to Santander using my CV membership, which saves aprox £80, at the end of September. The beginning of September is dearer, high season rates and the Bilbao crossings are dearer also.

Edit:
For comparison some previous Santander to Portsmouth, same vehicle with CV discount
Jan 18......£278
May 19....£343.50
May 20....£327.50.......cancelled

Portsmouth-Bilbao 1/10 17.....£400

To start with my van is 8m, looked to book for the 6th of September. Our friends ferry is £347 on the 8th and their van is 7.5m although they are BF members and booked it last year. No way am I paying what I was quoted, slightly cheaper going to Santander but I was thinking on going into France before heading to southern Spain.

It is bound to be twice the price if they are having to run at only 50% capacity. It is the same on channel ferries 2,5 x what I usually pay.

I did a quote for cross channel and it was less than double my previous crossing which will be 2 years ago come September.

Tunnel for September is £92 (€100)

minimal toll route approx €40

tank of Diesel through France €100

Total approx €240

Ferry, €800 - so a difference of €560 each way

You can buy a lot of tapas for €1120 ;)

I don't think BF are charging double or possibly much more than normal, possibly extended high season rates into September.
If you look at the prices I posted in #15 I can get roughly comparable prices for late September/early October.

Big tree not sure if this is any good. Good overnight stop at Newhaven and 20% off over 60's if booked by phone

We use Newhaven a lot if going down the west side of France or Spain saves us 400 miles on a round trip over Dover. It does help only living 20 miles from Newhaven.

From a different viewpoint

15th Sept Portsmouth - Santander £400 for 6m van......£400

Journey from Rochdale to Tavira via Potsmouth-Santander is 760 miles less than the tunnel and has the huge advantage of avoiding the M1 and M25 and SE England.

Total cost using Santander, 895 miles with fuel at €1.25/litre and 32mpg is £560 and 4 days driving 1 in UK, 3 in Spain.
Leave Rochdale 15th AM arr Tavira 19th, 1 night in a nice cabin on a cruise ferry, nice meal, free breakfast relaxing day, 2 nights in van in Spain enjoying few beers and tapas

Using tunnel, 1654 miles.........fuel.....................£290
tunnel ..............£100
tolls min £40 Max £150 say £100
TOTAL £490
7 days driving, 6 nights in van

Leave Rochdale 15th Am arr Tavira 21st, 6 nights in van

I realise that driving through France is part of many peoples holiday, it isn't for me and I work on a maximum of 250 miles a day

We have decided not to go to Portugal due to the government banning all wildcamping for the foreseeable future. 😢
