Just like our first MH which we named "Drunken Brian" as it drank like a fish - 17 mpg - and named after the snail in "The Magic Roundabout". It leaked like a sieve around the sliding doors and needed hot wiring to start it - eventually! Managed to p/ex it for a VW Holdsworth Villa which was far more like it - but still only did 25-26 mpg. I would find it hard to get nostalgic about either of them!

Bedford CA, I drove my mates ice cream van for him when he was ill & it was a CA.

Tis nice to see some are still on the road, but I'm glad I don't have to drive them.

My first job on leaving school was at Fred Silletts garage in London Road, Kings Lynn ,they were Vauxhall Bedford dealers and I spent many hours changing oil , filters and greasing CA vans . I can even remember the oil filter number AC90 .There was a trapeze artist who owned a light green and pink Dormobile that stood out from all the vans that came in for service, funny how I can remember these things nearly 60 years ago but not where I put my glasses .The sliding door could catch you out if driving with it opened and not securely fastened . There is a restored blue and cream coloured one of these round the corner from me . You could also get these with a Perkins 4/99 diesel engine presumably for economy , certainly not performance .

My parents had one based on the Ford Thames 400E, and uncle had a LWB Landrover Dormobile,
What great holidays we all had in those vans

Is that the original Dormobile ?

When I were but a lad, friends of the family had one in the late 60's
(although only in pale blue)

They drove it to Brittany for at least two summers and spent 6 weeks of the school holidays living it, with 2 kids !

The mind boggles at the thought of two adults and two kids being stuck in that for 3 months !
They made them tough in them days
(Queue the Yorkshireman sketch)

Bedford CA dormobile, My first memories of motorhoming all those years ago. It lit a passion that has endured the decades. Looking back, they were happy memories, but how did we put up with the major issues that came with it?

I remember seeing a film about one of those vans ,I think it belonged to the actress Dora Bryan and it had a full size bath fitted .It showed a day trip out and they even took the budgie :giggle:

It is lovely. I can remember my old Scout Group had one and soon after passing my driving test I was out in it collecting jumble with one of the Assistant Scout Leaders who was also the village bobby. He persuaded me to drive it so as to get used.to different vehicles. Certainly different it had a column gear change!

Cool for a museum to have. But wouldn't want to use it, it would totally spoil the holiday 🥴

I wonder did it stand out as such a crap drive in its day, or was it just accepted and probably a bit of an inovative motor. Looks like a real head turner back then. (y)

I look at the front and if the classic Disney team had been asked to design a car for Popeye or Bluto it would have looked a bit like this?

Used to drive one, a builders van. If you got fast enough to change to third by time you had fought column change you’d lost so much speed it was back to second. Lots of fresh air driving with sliding doors open. H&S?

Learnt to drive in a CA milk float, bit of a shock when i got first car !!

For anyone driving at that time, out of curiosity, better or worse than the contemporary VW?
