Hello Funsters hope you can advise. We have our 2006 Rapido 7099f with Fiat 2.8. (base is 2005). Have done 56000 miles.
We are considering having our engine remapped - not too worried about fuel consumption but would like to get up & down hills easier & reduce gear changing a bit ?
So has anyone got experience which could be useful - also any recommendations of a reliable company to carry out this work. Looking forward to your comments.
Thanks George

In my honest opinion, if it’s not an automatic, leave well alone, as many have suffered premature clutch failures or slipping clutches as there’s just too much torque to transfer.

I have the 2.8JTD and find it perfectly suitable for the van.

Use the search facility above and see all the many previous threads on this topic, as that should give you a steer.

Just my opinion.

We did and have not looked back since. Best improvement we have made to date.

I did it on our 2003 2.8 for just the same reasons, because of the high-ratio 5th gear. I specified just why and what I wanted and the result has done just that.

If I want 'soar' a hill in 5th I have keep the revs up above 2100, which probably uses a bit more fuel, but no more than changing down.

If you do it, just be careful to not let the engine labour, as the extra torque produced by the remap could put a strain on the drive train, but other than that it is a well-worth excercise.

I would recommend Alex at Boosters, but he is based in Norfolk so not convenient for you, but he travelled to Peterborough Services to do ours.

Geoff

EDIT Re PP Bear's warning about burnt-out clutches etc., that is why I warned about 'Labouring' the engine - if you feel that happening then change down a gear immediately. If one has a feel for an engine/gearbox combination on should be able to feel the 'sweet spot' range. I suspect those who burnt out clutches did not. I had the remap 7- 8 yes ago and have been up and down the Alps twice and the Pyrenees with no problems.

Just had mine done a few weeks back and it pulls and drives so much better it’s like a different van😁
Have an extra 2mpg so that’s handy but it’s the cruising speed that’s better as it’s not up and down through thr gears all the time and it pulls away a lot smoother.

Only have 8k on my van so it should improve more once it’s clocked up a few more.

These chaps done mine, came to my house and took an hour.

I’ve had the Range Rover remapped, and fully intend to have the MH done in the next few weeks, the difference in very obvious in torque,,not top end,,I find the MH seems to lack low end, hence getting her done,,,

Just don’t tell them,, a remap could be done before you had the vehicle without you knowing😜

How much does a remap affect the insurance?
It doesn’t, unless you go for a racing tune, all out power then the Insurance companies are not bothered. I told them when I had my Pathfinder done with a plug in chip and they said no issues.

So Coastal Cruiser. What’s the figures before and after, just curious as I have the 3.0L engine in the Fiat (177bhp)?

You’ll go from 177 to 221,,,gain of 41%. Torque will go from 400 to 503, also a gain of over 40%. 👍

I had the 210hp Iveco and it is now around 240-250, was averaging 15.5 now 18.5.
Have 8k on the clock so these figures should improve once I clock up a few more, off on a 3k+ trip next week so will be interesting to see how it goes, I normally drive at around 60-65mph but have noticed at 60 it does make the mpg a bit better.
Although it’s nice having the extra mpg I think it’s the torque that has helped the most as it’s like driving a different van, before it would go between gears all the time and now it just pulls without changing and it’s much better for pulling away.

😳 Wow our van is 130bhp and seems to be plenty powerful, always leave it in 6th gear and cruise control on motorways.
I do have to change down to 5th for the pyrenees mountains mind 🤔

That sounds great as long as it doesn’t destroy the clutch in the comfortmatic😳😳 what’s the average cost for this type of thing?

Had our motorhome re-mapped by DCP tuning on a 150bhp boxer which has improved hill climbing considerably and also consumption by 10% - 15% depending on engine revs

Had him come back and do my car a few weeks back, 400+HP and 600+torque 😁😁

Did 3100 miles in the van to Croatia after the remapping and glad I had it done as the van just purred along and pulled a lot better up 15-18%hills😳😳
Mpg was also around 3-4 more so bonus.

Was that based on the dashboard read-outs? Or pump-to-pump calculations?

Pump to pump calculations a few times, however when I checked against the on board computer reading they were within about .5-1 mpg so pretty much the same.
As said before the extra mpg is a bonus but it’s the way the van pulls and cruises along without going up and down the gears that makes it worth the cost.
