About to buy again!
Exp
Several years
Just had my medical (a bit of a joke) to retain my C1 entitlement when renewing my licence at 70. Confused by the licence application form. My wife and I both read it and decided as I already have a photo licence you did not need to send new photo's with it or fill in the passport number. However reading the threads it looks like some of you in the same position have done both when already having a photo licence. There was even somebody had their application returned for not including a photo. Can some of you who have been through this clear up the confusion. Do I or do I not need to send a photo?

Just done my D4 and the license application form said no need for a photo.

Think it was printed on the front and top right of the form.

HTH 😊

When I did my C1 in December 20 a new photo was not needed if there was more than 56 days left on the old license. The passport is for proof of identity if a new photo is needed, which saves getting signatures. Basically it means if you get your application to the DVLA in the first 34 days of the 90 day period you don’t need a new photo. I suspect it also speeds up the DVLA’s processing of the application, my new license arrived in less than a month which included Christmas and New Year.

Isn't the photo valid for 10 years? The explanitary notes for the D4 should clarify if one is required with the submission.

The passport number is used so that they can use use the same photo. That’s how it worked when we renewed our licenses recently.

That's right, if you are sending your passport they use the photo off that.

If you want to retain your C1 entitlement you need to complete a D2 form not a D1 (and submit a D4 medical report).

They may have modified the forms in the last year but the notes on the D2 I had last year were quite clear.

Which I took to mean that if you get your application in before 56 days you don’t need a photo. It worked for me without a photo.

If you do need a photo because there is less than 56 days on your old license.

Which says nothing about using the passport photo just using the passport to verify your identity. It just saves getting signatures on the photo.

There seems to be no consistency on what they require so best to supply passport number, photo and cheque 👍

I am even more confused. Thought it was a D1 not a D2 application. Will get a D2 form tomorrow and check it out.

I was one of those who had application sent back, supplied photo, and then got license.although form did say photo was not required

D1 is standard form for car license but to keep C1 on your license you need D2 and D4.

I sent off the medical forms and a photo, I was still on my old paper licence, you don't need to send any payment.
Got my new licence back after a 14 week wait, all good.

I think D1 is a minibus licence.

D1 which i have just help grandchild fill in is for a standard car license it does not include, I Quote from the form! " Lorry, bus or minibus "

No minibus is D2. D1 is for cars, motorcycles, mopeds and motorhome up to 3500kg.
I thought motorbikes were A, car’s and vans, motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes B. Up to 7.5 tonnes C1, over 7.5 tonnes C and minibuses D1, Buses and coaches D.
When did these groups change please? I only renewed my licence in October, dropped my C+E but retained C1+E and D1+E.

I would send a photo to be safe because knowing the DVLA you send your application in 70 days in advance, the DVLA don't look at your application for 3 weeks and then reject it as its now less than 56 days.

If 70 or over there is no charge even if you need to send a photo, even though the confusing form makes it look like you have to pay.

Thanks Phil, I thought the OP was getting the groups they were asking for mixed up and this could cause a hold up in issuing the new, replacement licence.

They haven‘t changed we are just discussing the forms needed for renewing a license.

If you are just applying for a license renewal you can apply online here

You just need:
  • a valid UK passport
  • to be a resident of Great Britain - there’s a different service in Northern Ireland
  • to pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
  • addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
  • your current driving licence (if you do not have your licence you must say why in your application)
  • your National Insurance number (if you know it)
  • to not be disqualified from driving
My wife got hers back in 5 days!

Not if you need to keep your C1 at over 70.

Very similar, but I’m only 61. I didn’t pay anything just sent a photo and dropped my C+E but kept C1+E and D1+E. Mine took 9 days from posting it off to arriving in the post box. This was by Royal Mail.

I started applying for my second C1, posting the D2 & D4 forms 21st June licence due to expire 21st Sept so more than 56 days left. I too understood as I had a current passport and gave the number, I did not need to send a photo. Got all the forms back requesting a new photo. The letter said ignore all the red ink markings, it’s what they use to process the forms. Got a new photo posted everything off 12th September.
got a letter today telling me they are now writing to my doctor to check my fitness to drive. I had a minor TIA in June 2006 no further episodes or medication. Applied and granted my first C1 2018 having declared my TIA, licence granted. As there was no mention of any query when I got the forms back in Sept, we have just had 700 watts of solar, a 2kw Victron multi, all the relevant goodies and 2 x 100 Transporter batterie. In our plated at 4000 kg A class which wasn’t cheap. So now left confused. When I spoke to Doctor in 2018 she said there was nothing in my records that would affect my C1 entitlement but they no longer did the medical.
