As we've now had a couple of hard frosts I've now drained down the Combi D 6E boiler, opened safty valve and pipework drain cocks. Emptied water tank and expelled water from tap pipe work.
The hymer handbook states removing the water pump as well.
Two questions is this really necessary on a inboard water tank(now empty) to remove the pump?
Secondly its unclear if I can still run the electric heater element of the boiler to occasionally warm though the van when it gets really cold.
Many thanks.

I've never removed a water pump or see it written anywhere.
Yes you can run the heater without water but the air in van will just hold more moisture. I never heat ours when not in use.

Perhaps the reference to the pump is to the filter?
The plastic filter covers can crack if the water inside freezes. You won't notice anything until you start to pump again and the pump draws insufficient water (air instead). remove the filter after draining down and put it back before filling-up again.

We didnt get the chance to drain down last year in second lockdown no access to storage yard. The plastic bowl on the filter cracked so i think you need to remove this as a fail safe. Just put it somewhere that will remind you to refit it before you head out again.
