Hi lads
Any chance of a bit of help
I am trying to change the cigarette lighter socket on my ducato (year 2000) to a lockable type
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/231322095149?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
There are three wires in the original fitting-purple,red/blue and yellow.
the new socket has just positive and negative only.
I checked the connections on the old socket wit a continuity tester and it seems that the red/blue is positive and the yellow is negative.I don't know about the purple wire.
I connected the red/blue to positive and yellow to negative but no luck.
I then connected purple positive and yellow negative but again no luck.
Where am i going wrong?
why is there 3 wires instead of two.
i have checked the fuse.it is fine

Think you will find one is for illumination when your light`s or ignition is on... most cig lighters have a small bulb strapped to the side... some how.. ::bigsmile:

Few years
I seem to remember when I changed my cig lighter it had 3 wires
There was a negative and two positives. One was a feed to the positive of the socket and the other was a positive that was switched with the side/headlights which lit a bulb in the cig igther socket so you can see if at night. I just connected the negative and the positive that ran from the fuse board and not the one that was switch with lights.

As said one is purely illumination. Have you tested with the IGNITION ON!

thanks lads
did not think of the light for illumination
the lighter circuit is live even when there is no keys in the ignition.
the radio is the same.
i assume a previous owner rewired it, so as to have radio and power even with no keys.
it makes it harder to diagnose .
thankfully i did not cut off the fiat connector.
i just used male spade connectorsat one end and female at the other
the original socket was damaged when i removed it. but i have kind of got it back in shape
maybe the new socket is not working
