thinking of visiting some Christmas markets.

Questions=
when is the best time?
Where is the best place to visit?
How long should we allow?

Most Christmas markets seem to start at the very end of November and go on to the New Year. Always found UK to be rubbish. The best seem to be in Germany, where Cologne is the king (and largest) although there are lots of excellent ones in much smaller places. Those I've visited in France have tended to be mixed, although there are a few supporters of Gravelines if you don't want to travel too far. Been a couple of threads very recently.
But don't go with the idea of Christmas "bargains", cheap they certainly are not. Go for the spectacle, the ambience and the mulled wine!

since 2014!
Another vote for Frankfurt, but I may be biased, as I used to live there! The Christmas market in most German towns and cities is a pretty 'serious' affair, and you will generally find them advertised on the town's website - in Frankfurt this year, it's from November 27th to December 22nd, and is touted as being the biggest in Germany!!!

Cologne is amazing. 7 different markets spread round the city. You need 4 or 5 days.

Bernkastel Kues is the prettiest/ most traditional and Trier nearby has a really good market. You need 2 or three days to do those two.

Aachen is very good but it's not very big and spread out. But worth going just for the gingerbread and that was the only one we actually did real Christmas shopping. You need a day or so for that one.

Maastricht is also good (although not in Germany of course)

There are hundreds more. These are just our experiences.

Enjoy.
