Hello, how difficult is it to change the oil sump and oil filter on my 2003 fiat ducato 2.8jtd turbo motorhome without ramps/jack?
(i.e. lying on my back with head torch)
I have read that for engine 8140.43S, 10w-40 synthetic is recommended and requires 5.7 ltrs - is this correct?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

The Sump can be changed lying on your back, make sure the engine half that the sump bolts to is clean before fitting the new one. It can be fiddly getting the gasket in place and I advise using a few longer bolts to use as guides. You can use 10w 40 semi or fully sythetic

By 'oil sump' I assume you mean just the oil and not the actual sump.

Changing the oil and filter is very easy, but may be difficult without raising the front, I use my leveling ramps.

If it just the oil and filter it is simple without ramps or jacks, my ducato is on 16" wheels.

Can’t comment on how easy/difficult it is as never done it. But just wanted to say that my mechanic uses 10/40 semi synthetic on my 2.8 jtd.

there is thread "What engine oil 2.8jtd" In there 10w-40 semi synthetic is recommended

Thanks for the feedback. LesW - I did mean oil Sump removal and replace with new as existing heavily corroded/pitted/damaged.
catpirate, podney and figaro , some great info - thanks
I have got the new sump & gasket.
Will coat it in x2 coat primer & coat of hammerite before fitting.
I will get some longer bolts, use the levellers & 10w-40 semi or synthetic when I attempt the job.
Will let you know how i get on in due course.

Changed mine with it on the Thule levelling ramps and laying on my back.

Same engine. Definitely didn’t take that much oil.

Easy enough but get a good gasket, as my new sump never came with one.

PS use a new washer on the sump plug after changing. I use annealed copper washers. nothing worse that a leaking sump plug.

there are 2 different oil filters they changed after a certain engine number so make sure you have the right one before you start I got caught out last year and had to wait a couple of hours till the correct one arrived
