My previous username was picked because we had a black Labrador called Molly; sadly she has reached the end of her life in this home, aged 15 and a half. I've now changed my user name as a compliment to our 3 grandchildren, non of whom were in our lives when Molly arrived in summer 2004! I thought our 'young' yellow lab might miss Molly, but she appears to be revelling in being an only (and top!) dog. She might even make it into the PVC with me next summer!!!

We have 2 litter brothers who have never been apart. The smaller one Tom adores his brother, follows him every where, hates him going out of sight. Jerry was in vets\hospital for over 2 weeks following back surgery and we were very worried about how it would effect Tom, would he eat, pine, waste away?

So we made a huge fuss of him, took him everywhere so he wouldn't be lonely, he sat on our knee, ate his favourite food and was generally spoilt rotten. Much to our amazements he didn’t seem to miss Jerry after the first day and really came into his own, more confident and cheerful - we couldn’t believe it!

I swear the day Jerry came back ( and was caged for a few weeks) Tom took one look, sweared and sulked.

We got the 2 dogs when they were one and the previous owners asked that they were never split up and that when one died that we had the other one put down so they were never parted - obviously Tom would not agree to that,

Never cease to surprise me, dogs

There is an argument which says you should never get two dogs from the same litter. The issue is they have already formed their own family and see the new humans as just providers of food.

So what's wrong with your real name?

Hi GrimsbyGranny, love your new name (y)

Can’t agree with that argument. We had litter mates, brother and sister, Doberman crosses. They were the best of friends and definitely part of our family. They had been in rescue, kept separately, for a while before they came to us, so maybe their mutual bond had diluted a bit.

The argument in my option is correct. Tom had bonded to his brother far too much and had lost some of his character which started to come out when Jerry was in hospital. Jerry strangely enough was not bothered about Tom and adores and follows me.

I was always told you should get one dog and when trained them take on a 2nd dog/puppy it was just that the previous owners (first time owner had gone for one, felt sorry for the other, had bought them for Xmas, didn’t train them and yes that included house training , oh treated them like dolls with clothes and carrying them everywhere ) wanted to rehome them as a pair and I was the only one daft enough to take them on - they were monsters!

That was 9 years ago and I wouldn’t be with out them - love them to bits - although I would strongly recommend never to get 2 siblings puppies at the same time.

Sorry to hear about Molly, but pleased the young 'un is managing ok.
When our two litter brothers were off the lead on a walk, we would shout them back, they would pause, look across at each other, then totally ignore us ! Now Blue isn't here, Sky hardly leaves our side on a walk unless we have our son's dog to walk too, then they will go off together. We toyed with getting him a companion, but he seems happy enough getting all the attention to himself.

I think if Tom and Jerry had spent some time separated then they would of been much better - even now after their forced separation when Jerry was ill - the balance between the two is better.

Sorry .... Can someone explain the beauty of Grimsby Granny please:unsure:? Does it refer to some book hero or TV serial or anything else I know nothing about? Nirvanauk .... must be something like that as it reminds you of your youth!

we have 2 litter mates, Ceran and Merlin. We went to look at the litter with the intention of homing the little girl who is virtually blind. As I sat there checking over Ceran, the runt of the litter Merlin would not leave me alone. The 2 weakest puppies had already bonded and cared for each other
a couple of weeks later they came home to join Ronnie, who immediately fussed over and loved them. They are all very close and if any 1 of them is away at the vets the other 2 miss them

as for the idea that they are their own pack and only need us for food, totally wrong. They look to us as pack leaders for everything, but will happily play together

I think it just shows what we already know - all dogs are different and have their own personalities :giggle:

Hi yodeli, the first mention of Grimsbygranny was in Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, there's some confusion as to whether it referred to a device for warming your mattress or was a type of Lincolnshire sausage, however, every home (or motorhome) should have one ! :imoutahere::LOL:

Hi Chris
Like the user name and the funny thread it has inspired. Not remembering the reference in Christmas Carol, I googled your new user name. Not a good idea!!!!!!!!!
Never knew what went on in Lincolnshire.
not just gullible, me, but innocent too?

Grimsby at one time was once one of the largest fishing ports in the world. I was born there for my sins! I served my apprenticeship at the Great Grimsby Ice Company and it was horrible!!
I couldn’t wait to leave and haven’t been back in 50 years. That’s all there was too it really.
