I need to keep medication below 25 degrees and am thinking about changing our little two-way fridge for one that will run on gas as well. Any thoughts on this?

Sounds like a good idea. You need to find one that'll fit in the space you've got then strongly recommend you have it fitted professionally as it'll need to be plumbed into the existing gas system, be properly vented etc.

By two-way I presume it's 12v/240v. What type of fridge and what van you trying to fit it to will help others to give (probably) better advice.

Dometic Waeco Coolmatic CR 50
12 volt only, not two-way as I thought. We don't need anything bigger, although a taller one or deeper one could be fitted. the obvious one to replace would be if Waeco did a gas one. There is gas on that side for the waterr heater, so maybe not too much problem. We have been running on the leisure battery while travelling, and intermittently when parked with no hook up.

A gas fridge needs vents to outside but not all compressor fridges do so if you are replacing an all electric fridge with a gas one you may need to get the tin snips out. :)

If you only need under 25 degc for your meds have you considered getting one of the 12v cool boxes and fitting it with a thermostat to keep the box say at 17 to 20 deg, which is quite warm for a fridge/cooler. It shouldn't use much power to run it compared to running it without a thermostat.

Just looking up this fridge - it seems to be a compressor one! I have NEVER heard the motor running so assumed it was an absorption one! Also, a new one is £550 - I can't actually find the price of a three way one. Might have to rethink a bit!

Thanks for the advice - having seen the price of fridges a powered coolbox might be a better idea. Not sure where we'd put it..... Not too keen on cutting ventilation holes either!

I fear so. In my previous van we had no fridge, just an extremely well-insulated coolbox with room for 2 large ice packs, milk, and butter. The ice packs were still frozen after three days (although I don't think we had this much heat). We bought everything fresh and cooked it on the day. I think I might try to construct a smaller one for meds.

What about something like these? You can put a small ice-pack in so you can turn them off overnight etc if needs be, you can often pick them up at car boot sales cheaper.

Thank you - I will check them out. I'm sort of inclining towards an extremely well insulated compartment with room for a massive ice block. I guess anywhere - camp site, restaurant, etc would freeze one for us if we explained it was for medication.
