I wondered if this was a British only idea of wether it happened abroad. It struck me that if it did it would be an easy way to get the odd bit of cash whilst shopping without incurring withdrawal charges. Does anyone have knowledge of this?

Took me a while to get my head around what you were talking about........

It's something we are offered on a regular basis in this country along with do you need help packing.

I haven’t seen it offered in France, Spain, or Portugal.

They are not trying to be helpful. Getting you to carry their excess cash is cheaper than them counting and dealing with it.
Typical business account is charged circa £8 per £1000 to bank cash

I think our local Intermarché has offered cash back on (French) card transactions for a while

I was also told by someone who works in retail, that cashback is done to benefit the retailer who would otherwise have to pay the bank to process cash.
When I first saw this post I thought it referred to the odd arrangement where you buy something, usually on credit, and the seller gives you a cash payment. Why not just knock it off the price?

I think you may find, your card issuer will still treat it as a cash withdrawal and levy their charges accordingly......I would check with your bank before

Our local shops have been doing this for years, and there is no charge from the provider.
