What are people’s views on carrying empty Calor propane bottles? I’d assumed it would be okay to carry an empty bottle horizontally/ laying flat but have been told this is dangerous and they must always be upright. Is that correct? What’s the danger posed by an empty bottle?

I would assume.....knocking the valve, or gunge in the bottom of the bottle getting into the valve. Plus, in an accident the bottle could move, unless strapped down.

Yes I can see the risk in a collision so it would be secured in the garage.

Normally a gas cylinder has liquid in it. By keeping the bottle upright only gas can escape if the valve leaks. If on its side liquid might escape which would produce a lot of gas. Hence keep them upright.
Damage to valve also less likely if upright.
If cylinder empty then I see no problem with any orientation....

Yes & physically retained to maintain the position.

They can explode as they still contain vapour
Gas forklifts have the bottle mounted on its side
Yes & they draw off liquid so are mounted horizontally so that the dip tube, which a normal bottle does not have ,can only pick up liquid. They also can only be mounted horizontally in one position so that the dip yube is at the bottom.

As above unless vacuumed out they will still contain vapour .Puncture them & they can explode.

Here in spain it is an offence to carry bottles in any position except upright & firmly fixed to ensure they cannot fall over .

Thanks for explaining. So is the danger that the bottle is punctured and explodes? If it was secured so it couldn’t be punctured does that negate the risk or could it explode anyway?

The customer in front of me at an lpg pump on Friday was topping up 2 x 47kg bottles that where lying horizontal in the back of his SUV!
