Hi Top
Exp
Hit the road in 2014
I am considering getting rid of my car as the cost does not justify the amount of miles I cover. however last year when looking for insurance for the motorhome I was asked the question "do you have another vehicle" I confirmed I did. when I asked if it made a difference the reply was yes as we could not insure you if you did not. has anyone else heard of this issue. I have no convictions or accidents to consider.

Not come across that before, but we have always had a car and a van.whatvwould they say if you said you had a pushbike I wonder. It seems that consider you would be using your van more, this more of a risk. (y)

I guess they don’t want you using your van as your daily vehicle.
I could understand that scenario if you were using your van in a commercial capacity and required travelling in connection with employment , ie business use insurance, but just for social, domestic and pleasure use and travelling to and from a place (singularly) of employment, I would have thought that a motorhome, even at the top cost end, would be no different to insuring a car who's value may be in the luxury end bracket.

Don't want full-timers?

We've insured a MH without having a car but it was in 2012 so insurers may have changed their requirements.

Our insurers require proof that we have a car by us sending over a copy of our car insurance.
I was told it's to stop fulltimers taking out cheaper cover as they are a higher risk due to envisaged time and miles in their van compared to the normal usage per year for most MH owners.

I think it’s to do with the forum the OP posted in : MH questions and answers. So funsters reading the thread can vote “up” the answer that is thought to be the best/most relevant etc.

I only had a motorhome for 16 years and never been asked that question. Full timing for the last 10 years up until 3 years ago.

higher risk, travelling during rush hours to get back and forth to work, you rarely see vans on the road at this time of day.
all the retirees are either out walking dogs, cooking breakfast or maybe even nursing hangovers .... :giggler:

The average mileage for a motorhome is between 4 & 6000 miles a year, this is how the risk is evaluated over a broad spectrum, the assumptions are base that the majority of users are still in employment, use the van for the main two week holiday, a couple of bank holidays and the odd week end. Relying on alternative transport the rest of the year. If you have no access to another car etc, and you use yours for everyday needs shopping travel to work dads taxi the risk of claims is greater. I have looked after quite a few vans for customers over the last 3 years and there is a great difference in the mileages covered by them. But mainly less than 3,000 miles. One is 7 years old and has done less than 11,000 miles. Our 2003 one bought new had 84,000 when we sold it in 2007?

It's only for the 'Motorhome Questions' forum. The question reappears at the top of each new page. You can vote for the best answer to the question and I think it should somehow move up. Also off-topic posts like this one will presumably always get zero votes:rolleyes:
