Hi,

Am driving from Paris to Lake Garda in the summer, on route I am looking to stop in the Mont Blanc area to take a trip on the Aigulle Du Midi cable car.

I will have 2 nights there and was ideally looking for a site in walking distance from the cable car station.

I searched on the forum and their appears to be an Aire with good access, but I am with my family and would prefer a campsite with amenities.

There was mention of one near the hospital in Chamonix but the website isn’t active anymore.

Any suggestions??

Ta

Eddie

The aire at Chamonix is no longer.
It was about 2 years ago we went up there, armed with our, at the time, very current "All the Aires" book to find the aire had a height barrier.
I took the opportunity to moan at the TO. I filled something out complaining.
There is an aire opportunity up the road a bit from the TO.
There is a big campsite in the town, far too expensive for tight fisted old gits like me though.

Try to get your timing right for the weather up there or it could be a waste of time.

Enjoy

The aire still appears on Camper Contact 2019 app with reviews for Aug 2018. Maybe someone could confirm as were are hoping to use it later this year on route to Lake Garda.

Thanks for the info, am really looking for a nice site with a short walk to the Midi.

Funnily enough I will also be on route to lake Garda.

If you are doing the midi and it is a nice day, then do it early morning. Two reasons.....

  1. You avoid the hordes of Chinese tourist who come in by the bus load and the cable cars get very crowded. Ok if you like stale fish and garlic though.
  2. It can cloud up by lunchtime, as the wind starts to blow with the warm air rising so if it is clear, go for it

We were lucky with the weather when we went in Sept 2013. It’s very expensive I think it was nearly €100 for the two of us but well worth it, if as already mentioned there is no cloud or mist.

PS remember to take a coat!,

Bella Italia. I have teenage kids so need to keep them busy.

Thanks for the tips. Get up early, clear day, take a coat and plenty of cash....

We are staying next door a Camping Cappuccini first week of July.

Stayed at Garda about 16 years ago still remember how they packed everyone in. We shared a plot with another motor home just to get on site.
Drove through again last year and decided to do the west side of the lake. NOT a good idea let me tell you, very narrow and loads of tunnels, did most of the trip with passenger mirror folded in rather than have it ripped off. Stay to the East side is my advise.
