Just been told our niece is getting married in Skiathos next May, the wife would love to go but is terrified of flying, so thinking of driving but I can't find any campsites in Skiathos, anyone know of any.

Just looked on net. Three campsites. One shows motorhome in it?

Do you have a link please?

If you’re scared of flying, landing at Skiathos is perhaps one to avoid. The runway starts in the sea and ends in the harbour and it’s not very long. Bit of a white-knuckle ride ?

Reminds me of the tale of pilot landing for the first time at a runway that was very short. He came to a halt with one inch of tarmac to spare. He said to his colleague" wow, I see what you mean about that short runway; especially when you see how wide it is!" :D

It's about 2,000 miles to Skiathos. A long trip to avoid a 5 hour flight

This is the runway at Skiathos International. You can stand on the road at the end and get a new hairstyle ?

Google said that Camping KOUKOUNARIES in Skiathos is closed, also most reviews are not good.

Camping Koukounaries is recorded closed at this location. If it's incorrectly closed, please report it.

As for the drive that would just be a good excuse for a nice long holiday, 4 weeks there, and 4 weeks back.:D

It isn't far from the Greek mainland so it might be an option to park the van on a campsite, take a ferry across and stay in a hotel for a couple of nights.

Or suggest Gretna Green. :)

Why do people book these exotic locations and are then surprised when hardly anybody goes? Our eldest daughter has two children so her and hubby plus hotels £1500?

I remember a lovely holiday in Skiathos a few years ago and you’re right, the runway is very short. When taking off for the return flight, the plane could only carry enough fuel to get it to Athens airport otherwise it wouldn’t have got off the ground before the runway petered out ?

It’s a lovely place we were there many years ago you’ll get a ferry to there it won’t be a long trip go and enjoy????

I think leaving it at a site on the mainland is the best plan, couple of sites down the road at Kato Gatzea, Camping Sikia and Hellas, bus goes past to Volos and ferry for two return is around £110.
Whats the best route ferry from Italy or drive through the Balkans?

When we were there we took the hydrofoil which was very fast can’t Remember cost though.?

I presume they are getting married at a hotel.
Can you not park in their car park or grounds.
Then make a holiday of the trip.

Hi olley.Looking at your Avatar. If you have a RV I would think twice about taking to Skiathos. Roads were not that good last time we were there.Narrow twisty and in a terrible condition.

The problem of going through the Balkans is Albania as you will have to find insurance for driving through it and it almost certainly won't be on your current policy. Great place to visit but the easiest option is a ferry from Italy and there are many options. Robert Clark's current Greece thread would be worth scanning - he's sailing today. :)

Google takes you through Serbia and North Macedonia, misses Albania. Been following Robert.

Lovely island I did see one campsite while I was there. But only 1 real road unless you have a jeep. Can't tell you how or best way to get there but if you take your van please tell us all about your trip please.

Koukounaries has a stagnant lagoon behind the beach which is a great breeding ground/water for mosquitoes. British holiday companies supply loads of tourists as their meals.

I would try to find a wildcamping spot near the north coast, but the roads?

It is normally Thessaloniki Airport, as it is on the way north and do not blame 'peter' for the short runway.
