Had to cancel our forthcoming stay at Devizes due to electrical problems. Shocked we lost our £66 deposit and not allowed to transfer our booking to another date.

Harsh but apparently true:
8.1 If you wish to cancel your Booking you may amend/cancel a Booking for Services by contacting our Us (at HQ) or the site direct. Unless the Booking is stated to be non-cancellable or refundable, if:-

8.1.1 you cancel 30 days or more prior to the first day of the Booking and you have paid a Deposit for Services that have not been provided to you, We will refund such Deposit to you in full;

8.1.2 you cancel in 30 days or less prior to the first day of the Booking or during your stay other than under Clause 8.2, your Deposit is non-refundable.

8.2 If you arrive on Site but are not happy with any part of the Site and want to leave within 24 hours of arriving, We will offer you a choice of the following:

8.2.1 a transfer to another of Our sites, subject to pitch availability, so that you can continue your holiday elsewhere using the camping fees you have already paid; or

8.2.2 a cancellation of the remaining of your Booking in which case We will refund to you any unused camping fees already paid at the point of cancellation subject to any minimum booking period. For example, if an overnight stay has been completed, either the fees for one night or the minimum booking period will be retained by the Site.

Oh the pure joy of being a member of a club.
When is a 'Club' dedicated to its members before commercial interests?
To think that I was once a member.
Now I am with "FUN" and I have not yet seen the long list of rules that are required to keep members in order.

I think they had to do something over the last few years to discourage the "block bookers".

You know the sort when the window opens book the popular sites very weekend throughout the summer and then don't show up or cancel on the Friday because the weather forecast was not to good.

And of course if the other site they booked for the same weekend appeared to be a better option.

Jim does have rules for us, they are around somewhere!
Found them

I can see things from their point of view but seems harsh when you want to rebook for another date and due to a vehicle problem over which I had no control. Rules is rules! I note the other club copes without such draconian rules. As you say commercialism overrules members interests. Some club!

If you book the paupers rate at a Travelodge you have to pay it in full and there's no refund.

We lost £100 in February because the wife was taken quite ill. A Doctor's note doesn't help. :swear:

When we worked for them we were told you can move the booking foward once as long as it was for the same site

( your always better ringing the site direct )

The caravan and motorhome club used to suffer from those greedy members who "block book". Now they cannot book more than one site at a time, the website detects it.
I find their system very fair and user friendly. If you cancell more than 3 times they want to know why.

Thieves... What sort of 'club' is that then?

As someone has pointed out, a club should put its members first.

They are a business. Rates water Elec maintenance waste etc etc to pay for . they are a 'club' but overheads have to be paid

Don't 'club' members pay a yearly subscription for overheads then?

Whilst the OP is obviously unfortunate, I am happy enough with the policy in general. It's a poor show when you can't get on the popular sites because of speculative booking and the site loses out when large numbers cancel. The needs of the many, and all that ;)

Same happened top us when our engine failed to start, we couldn't get there but lost or deposit too.

Booked into CL near Ludlow. Wife broke arm, lost deposit. Did ask if we could carry it forward but no flexibility. Big or small seem the same.

Yes block bookers on the other club cause so much misery to those genuine campers .that camping and Caravan club do it this way .and it's tough if you have to cancel but thems the rules and when you book you agree to them , no crying afterwards sorry.

25% of total cost of booking. I actually think £25 would be OK and enough to deter most block bookers. I suppose I'm getting too old and naive as I wasn't even aware of this practice. I would never book unless I was committed to going. It not only deprives the Club of revenue but more importantly deprives others from making a booking.

Did they have enough time to resell the pitch remember its a business not a charity.

We were booked for 10 nights over two weekends at a busy time of the year with some nights showing full. I would guess our pitch has already gone and they only needed two nights to give us £50 of our deposit back

But if they are full and only book 2 nights they are losing the income from the vacant ones still. I wish the other club had similar rules its a lottery at present whether you get on or not. Perhaps a flat £15 a night lost deposit if cancelled with less than a months notice would be enought o deter block booking and not be too harsh. I know you have a genuine reason for not being able to go but as others have said its like booking any other accommodation.

Each to their own .club sites offer a great deal to many people. Especially disabled so please don't knock it..

I suggest you should work for the Club Wino. At £15 a night I would have lost £150 deposit! Although it wouldn't have helped me perhaps 7 days before would be more reasonable than 30.

When I worked at the campsite we would always move a booking far in advance, so it could be used another time. But only possible if the period had not yet started, as then, computer wouldn't let us.
