I’m thinking of putting a camera on the left hand side of the vehicle for awkward junctions.

The obvious place is attached to the wing mirror and run the cable through the mirror arm. That avoids putting a hole in the roof/wall where there is none.

What are the MOT implications in terms of risk to pedestrians of an object there? It’s hardly a sharp object...

Or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Does not come in to the MOT really, comes under use and construction rules and laws.
Providing there are no sharp bits facing forward no rules will be broken.. and to be honest I doubt very much any one will ever care anyway.

that brings to mind my last MOT which I left my dash cam stuck to windscreen and the examiner put an advisory note on it . He said he could have failed it as windscreen was obstructed .

I hate things on the screen. I’ll go a long way to avoid them. And wires on the dash/cab.

My dashcam is integrated into the review mirror, which also displays the permanent rear camera input. Satnav etc is delivered through an Android head unit where the stereo would’ve been. Not a visible wire trailing anywhere.

One day I'll have an A-class with half an acre of clear dash!

We had two cameras fitted at the front of our Winnebago on the body below the side mirrors. They were tiny, about the size of a tyre dust cap. Even if you fit something like this on the outside of the mirrors, they will hardly be noticed,

I have a camera mounted lowdown on the righthand side, the cover was missing leaving the plastic camera bracket exposed, the mot guy wrapped gaffer tape around it just leaving the camera exposed, he said otherwise he would fail it.

My MOT person (also a motorhomer) makes me remove all devices that obscure the screen prior to its MOT test. He knows damn well I'll put them back when it passes

Here's where I positioned my camera (cable goes through one of the mirror's arms) -

Mrs. EX has a nodding dog on the top of the dash. Car failed the MOT they gave us a fail certificate but did offer a free retest.

I don't understand why there is a need to put anything on the windscreen in the area of interest to the MoT? A satnav or dashcam in line of vision on the screen could easily obscure a pedestrian.

Volvo Trucks latest trucks where no external mirrors are fitted they have cameras instead and screens on inside pillars

Coming to the Hymer group sometime soon! Standard on Thor RV's for years, left and right mirrors

In that case, why isn't the rear view mirror considered a windscreen obstruction?

[BTW my PVC doesn't even have one]

I think mainly because it was in the line of vision defined by the sweep of the wipers.

Primarily because it is NECESSARY for the purpose of driving safely.

For most people, the location of the mirror does not create an obstruction to forward vision because of the location of the mirror at the top of the windscreen (line of sight from the drivers eyes to the mirror creates a blind spot that is above the likely hazard location).

However, for some taller drivers, myself included, the mirror can pose an obstruction. In cars I do not allow my passenger to drop their sun visor as this, in combination with the rear view mirror, obliterates 25% of the windscreen area. For this reason, I am highly conscious of any obstruction on the windscreen and it never ceases to amaze me how many drivers I see with sat navs mounted at eye height - utter madness.

Have a look at a police traffic car, they have all sorts of gadgets either on W/screen or fitted along top of dash

That is because it is deemed NECESSARY for them to undertake their duties. They are also allowed to operate portable communication devices and Joe Public is not.

Too many have knick-knacks dangling from the rear view mirror which must affect the driver's peripheral vision. I need to know of anything that I detect moving out of the corner of my eye - a pedestrian stepping into the road, cyclist coming up the inside, child's ball running into my path, vehicle jumping the lights.........
Greek taxi drivers seem to have rear view mirrors festooned with dice, air fresheners, worry beads, models of their Saint, photos of the family...........
I also shudder at the thought of anyone running into a rear cycle rack on a hatchback whether it has a bike on it or not.

I used to have a 24" HD telly on the dash :)

Unless it’s used for your work is what I was told by an mot guy ?

That’s because we are told they are highly trained ?

Some of the normal plod seem to have a job putting one foot in front of the other and they let them drive ?

Hopefully some of them are ?

I’m told this place is full of FUN people but sometimes it’s hard to tell! ?

No issues with the “highway patrol” ?

It’s some of the normal plod makes you think.

Example
I was in our central police station handing in a driving license I’d found.

I saw one of our boys in blue in a panda car turn right out of the station across the very wide road.

No problem you would think it was reasonably quite except for the no right turn sign at the exit ?

Poor obvs at the minimum.
Contravening a road traffic sign and driving without due care possibly ?

Your expectations are way too high ?
