This is not that uncommon as water can get onto the belt and freeze, but you can buy a kit that diverts the water away ,it is sold for citreon but fits Fiat etc. well worthwhile at about £15
What are these said kits? I’m assuming that our 2016 Peugeot will have something similar fitted. It has the injectors cover and some plastic belt covers down the left side of the engine.

I am/could be an 'indecent engineer' no longer fit enough for fixing but I can talk, sometimes too much, without problems.

My consultancy rates are reasonable (£75 per hr), and my knowledge wide especially on older models (both mechanical and human)

PM me if interested.
😂😂 thanks so much for the offer L’Hobo. With that knowledge and skill set sounds like you are selling yourself cheap! 😁

Good for you
Dealer sounds ok too - although your refund was probably eased by him having another buyer lined up. No doubt that sale was enhanced by the new cambelt
Thanks! Sadly for the dealer he had lined up a buyer for the van I currently own and was part exchanging so they have lost two sales today

There was a thread on this very forum about 2 years ago whereby the owner (Kevin) had exactly the same problem on his 2016 Swift on a Ducato chassis. I believe it ended up costing Kevin c£5k.

I've tried to find Kevin's post but without success.

Just to finish by saying I have just received a full refund into my bank account including cost of diesel for my failed trip yesterday so am relieved and I must say grateful for the dealer to refund this so quickly without any delay. I know I am entitled to my money back, but it does help to have such a swift response. Phew!

Thanks once again for all the advice and support given today

Thanks, what with this and eurajohn’s link about the engine failure in France, I may have had a very lucky escape

It is a plastic drain that fits in the middle to the body under the vents that diverts water from the vents via hose

That kit will collect any water that is not routed down the factory fitted channels that comes from the ill fitting plastic shroud that directs the water flow from the bottom of windscreen , a better bet is to remove the plastic and redo the seal between it and the screen.
The cam belt is at the opposite end of the engine to the discharge of that kit and has pretty comprehensive covers fitted by Fiat

That looks like a very complicated arrangement to catch leaks that should not be there in the first place.

Geoff

The problem is, as I found out when I purchased my 2007 Ducato is, the scuttle drain is on the wrong side.
It is okay for Italy but, because the camber of the road in UK is opposite that of Italy because we park, on the opposite side of the road, the scuttle fills up and overflows over the engine.

I overcame this by adding another drain on the other side of the scuttle. I drilled a hole, big enough to accommodate a small sink drain that I rescued from an old caravan sink. I attached a pipe which drained the water to the ground,

Getting Better
Looked at mine yesterday and there was a pool in there so today I dried it out and brushed loads of oil all over.
The van isn’t going anywhere at the moment so put a temporary cover on until I can really sort it all….

Walk away, there’s another van out there for you somewhere. Also never heard such an excuse as to someone washed it and water got in and froze blah blah blah, just look elsewhere, that’s my advice.

Jumping just the one tooth can lead to the top of the piston striking the valves, which usually bend.

I don’t know if I’d trust the engine after they’ve done it and then spend forever worrying about it.
It does happen https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.u...of-timing-belt-when-it-has-frozen-has-formed/

Name and not shame the dealer - when they get it right they need to be applauded.
Highbridge. Liz at Head office in Somerset is extremely efficient and sorted out the prompt refund. Jody in the Devon branch was the manager dealing with the sale and who offered the refund as soon as the problem became apparent.
He emailed me last night as they have another van coming in on Monday as a part exchange so I’m waiting for the details to arrive. Still a Fiat base though so I am reading with interest what others are doing about the drainage problem.

I’ll be interested to hear what you decide to do and glad my post prompted you to check your engine!

Hymer Van
Ehm.. Didn't see the engine type mentioned anywhere but guess it's a 2.3 as it wouldn't be the first 2.3 with the belt hopping a bit.

At my work - and at other places to which we share information with - I've seen quite a few 2.3's with cambelt jumping and not once has there been any catastrophic failure as is the case with belt problems in most engines. The worst - and the most common - mechanical result that has occured has been the rockers snap/bend. They are meant to do that and protect from bigger failures and they seem to work as planned.

Once after being a night out in a blowing snowstorm I stalled my engine when trying gently to get going, and after a restart I had the engine fault light on. All was still OK and I drove to my work, and there I noticed the idling might have been a bit rough. Still later that day I drove yet another 10 kilometers to our other 'office' and checked the fault codes. Like expected, cam and crankshaft out of sync. Turned out it had jumped one notch (?). All we did was to change the belt and all that ran with it and off I went. Had the van for maybe 10000km after that without problems.

So I'd say if it's the 2.3 go for it if it suits you.

Thanks for this detailed reply PDrill and interesting to know you have heard this happen before as it seems a lot of people are unaware of this problem. Useful to know if I get another 2.3 Ducato, but for now I decided not to go ahead with the purchase
